I did not attend class today because I'm sick, but I took the initiative to read the lesson we are suppose to discuss today.

For the most part, I already knew about the different types of writing an introductory paragraph. However, I have always had trouble writing concluding paragraphs. However, I wish that you went to class because today's lesson will definitely help all of us when writing our essay for our upcoming test. It was probably one of my favorite lessons so far. We did an exercise where we had to use the different methods to write introductory paragraphs on a thesis of our choice. In today's class session, learning about the different types of introductory paragraphs was very helpful. I struggle sometimes with writer's block and have difficulty with creating introductory paragraphs, but with the methods that were taught today, it will definitely get a lot easier.
ReplyDeleteI also struggle with writing my introductory paragraph. I always had a hard time trying to make the introduction powerful and not boring. The techniques we've learned today I think will help our problem and make writing the beginning of our essays much easier.
DeleteI didn't even know we were supposed to use those methods, if you noticed earlier, I just kept crossing things out, because I wasn't sure how to start my intro, but right after our classmates shared their paragraphs using three of the methods, I realized how easier it would have been for me to write my intro paragraph too. Lesson learned
DeleteI have the same problem as you. I find it difficult to create an introductory paragraph. There is just so much pressure when writing it because it is the first paragraph in an essay. If your intro paragraph doesn't catch the reader's attention then your whole essay is useless. However, I know that I will be able to improve because of the lesson we learned today.
DeleteI'm always spend most of my time figuring out what to write for the beginning of an essay, but learning about introductory paragraphs will for sure help making an intro much easier to write.
DeleteToday's lesson was about learning the different types of introductory paragraphs. This lesson was new to me. It was also helpful to do the exercise because it's easier for me to learn through practice. I am now able to determine which types of paragraphs to use for certain essays.
ReplyDeleteIt was new to me too, and I was glad we got to learn this lesson today. I believe it could really help us on our tests, it can save us some time!
DeleteThis was also something new to me as we'll. I never knew there were actually different guides in how to ride an introductory paragraph before. Also, being able to practice more than one technique in class helped me decide which One I can write best.
DeleteI vaguely remember learning this in high school. However, I did not go into detail like how we did today. The methods of writing introductory paragraphs will help me to formulate better essays. I also found it helpful to do the exercises. I rarely enjoy writing paragraphs, but I thought the exercise was quite enjoyable.
DeleteI did not know there were different ways to start an introductory essay. I thought it was just state a question, elaborate and thesis. I am more aware now of the different ways to start it.
DeleteToday's lesson is all about different types of introductory paragraphs. Having this lesson gives me an idea on having different way of writing an introduction that might capture the attention of my reader.
ReplyDeleteIt's always important to capture the readers attention right from the beginning. By having a great introduction, it will get their eyes glued onto your writing.
DeleteThis lesson gave me ideas as well as to how to write an introductory paragraph that will catch the reader's attention. I feel like I'm also going to rewrite my descriptive essay's introductory paragraph to make it sound more interesting using one of the techniques in the book we've learned today.
DeleteLearning about introductory paragraphs today in class was something I wasn't too familiar with. Knowing that there are a variety of introductory methods, it will for sure help me write stronger and clearer introductions for my future essays. Although the exercise was a bit difficult for me, I found it very helpful for practicing.
ReplyDeleteIt will certainly aid in writing stronger introductory paragraphs for your essays. I'm actually glad that we learned this today. I was amazed by the different ways that you could introduce a thesis. I believe that everyone in class will benefit from this lesson. It will become a useful tool when working on our essay for our upcoming test.
DeleteYou did a great job on your intro paragraphs today, Meryeil. :) You were able to utilize the methods well.
DeleteI guess we were on the same boat today because I never thought that there were so many different kinds of introductory methods either. Before today's class my introductory paragraphs were always a little bit messy and had no real structure to them. I know that from now on, my intro. paragraphs will be so much better.
DeleteThis lesson was useful to me as well despite the difficulty.
DeleteI chose to respond to the Narrative Essay Practice #1.
ReplyDeleteThe controlling idea of this paragraph is "After spending six months in a county jail where no cop ever said anything nice to me, I was not expecting to meet any here in the state prison that I would call "human."
There are multiple examples that support the controlling idea such as how he calls the inmates by their given name, the way he sings them a song to signal bedtime, and how he quietly checks on the prisoners during the night.
These examples are organized using an order called time pattern. It is an organizing method that is based on chronological order.
It is true that the examples are vivid, specific, and representative. They explain in detail how Officer Jenkins treats the inmates differently than other officials in the jail. There are examples given that are then followed by fine points that demonstrate said examples.
With the way the paragraph is written, it is easy to say that it uses the first person point of view to state the ideas.
For today's lesson, we learned the different ways as to how to write an introductory paragraph. I thoroughly enjoyed the exercise that accompanied this teaching. I know some may disagree with me, but I found it amusing to write different introductions for the same thesis statement. It is amazing how various techniques can still exemplify the same idea. It is definitely something that will prove to be useful when writing a well-written essay.
I also thought it was cool how there are many ways to write an introductory paragraph on the same topic. I personally liked writing my introduction using the quotation technique and the shocking statement and questions technique. All the techniques will help in writing our essays in the future and having them all start off strong.
DeleteI agree that everything we have learned so far will help us to write the ultimate essay one day, and today's lesson was no exception. I didn't know that there were so many different ways to write an intro. essay. I really enjoyed attempting to write three different paragraphs. It was interesting to see how they were each so different and yet had the same main idea.

You forgot to reflect on the class activities. However, I think you got all these answers right. I checked back on this essay too to see how my answers compared. For the most part, I think our answers compare agreeingly.
DeleteI tend to have a difficult time writing my introductory paragraph in an essay. I over think too much on how I should start it, and I waste so much time on just that first paragraph itself. Sigh. But Alas! Today's lesson taught me about the different methods of writing an introductory paragraph. I was surprised to see how much easier it was to start writing an intro paragraph and get the ideas flowing when you know exactly what method you're going for. Just a recap on those methods, we can use:
ReplyDelete-Direct statement of thesis
-Background
-Definition
-Quotation
-Shocking Statements and questions
and
-Questions and a definition
I have the same problem writing my intro, paragraph too. I often write and rewrite the intro before I can get it correct. I don't however waste too much time on the intro. Sometimes I find myself simply writing a basic outline of the whole essay and end up writing the rest of the essay BEFORE I write my introductory paragraph. I guess for me it helps if I have everything else written out first.
DeleteI am the exact way. When doing the exercise today, It took me quite a while to come up with a sturdy introductory paragraph. I tend to just keep writing and having to go back and scribble whole sebtences out.
DeleteYes, I am like this as well. In my introductions, I tend to over exaggerate and not get to the point.
DeleteI agree, I over think a lot as well when trying to write my introductory. sometimes I over think too much I don't even make much sense. I think if introductory are simple but can grab attention are the best types of introductions to a paragraph.
DeleteToday we learned about different ways you can write an introductory paragraph. Those ways are: direct statement of thesis, background, definition, quotation, shocking statement and questions, and questions and definition. I found the exercise we did in class a little difficult, only because for some of the ways to do an introductory paragraph you'd have to research more about your topic first in order to write the paragraph. However, I do feel these techniques are helpful to write a powerful introductory paragraph.
ReplyDeleteI agree, being able to write a strong introductory paragraph is important. It sets the mood for the rest of your essay. I did have some trouble as well with the exercise because I didn't have anything to do any research with. These days, students are finding it more and more difficult to do things without the internet or the use of a smart phone.
DeleteI agree, I tend to struggle the most when writing my introductory paragraph. Trying to figure out ways to grab the attention of the reader.
DeleteI also agree. I feel that when you write an introductory paragraph, you always need to go back and change the whole thing anyway after writing the body because you realize you probably didn't stick to what you intended to write about. However, if our topics and support ideas are ever a sure thing, then I'm sure that knowing different ways to bring them up will benefit our essays.
DeleteI read the first essay about a correctional officer being humane to the inmates. The controlling idea was that although the inmate was not expecting to meet any kind officers, but she did. There are multiple examples of the kindness that the officer showed to all of the inmates. The examples are given in order of when each event occurred. It is true that they were vivid, specific, and representative. This paragraph was written in the first person point of view.
ReplyDeleteIn today's class, we went over the different ways in which we could write an introduction paragraph to an essay. I feel that it is very helpful, and a good skill to be able to write multiple versions of an introductory paragraph. Being able to come at an essay from many different ways shows your understanding and knowledge of how to write an essay.
That is so true. I tgink it is important to know how to write these different types of paragraphs as well.
DeleteI agree being able to understand how to write in different ways is key in writing an essay
DeleteYes, the introduction to an essay actually makes a big difference to the tone and the main point of the essay. For example, looking back into the old literature I read, "A Modest Proposal" was written very SARCASTICALLY, and you'd only understand that if you understood his tone and the points he made use of in his first paragraphs. That is just a light example of the difference of introduction.
DeleteI missed class as well because I was sick, but I still read the book at home and on page 68 where it talks about introductions. This was definitely something new to me. Learning about using some introductory methods such as a direct statement of the thesis, background, definition of term, quotation, a shocking statement, questions and a combination of two or more of these methods. I think this is something that I will most definitely keep in mind when writing my next method.
ReplyDeleteCorrect, this is something I will keep in mind when writing an essay.
DeleteIt's always good to stay on track with the lessons when you miss a day so you would not be lost the next time you come into class!
DeleteI can tell by the blogs that today's lesson focused on introductory paragraphs. There are many ways to start an essay. A good beginning will result in a good ending. By following steps, writing an introduction will be a breeze.
ReplyDeleteI agree, once you got a great introduction, it will allow you to expand your ideas more and will lead to a great ending as well.
DeleteI guess you can write backwards, I've been taught to do that through highschool. Write your body, your conclusion and then your introduction to make sure you introduce it properly. However, I just didn't think of interesting ways to do it, I left it pretty generic. These strategies help a bit.
DeleteToday's lesson was actually pretty fun to try. We practiced some exercises with certain subjects and wrote about them from different introductions. I didn't realize how many ways you could bring up a topic. Also, in which way you introduce a topic sets the tone. It's almost like colloquial conversation... If you tell someone bad news in a bad way, they get that impression. For example, there's so many different ways to break up with someone. "It's over, I hate you," or "I'm sorry but I just don't feel it's working out..." and the point is that the whole situation depends on how the idea is introduced. Therefore, learning different ways to introduce our topics teaches us how to get our points across more efficiently and more interestingly.
ReplyDeleteFor the Susan B. Anthony story:
1) The specific unit is Susan B. Anthony
2) The principle function is to explain the importance of Anthony's life
3) It is divided in 5 parts.
4) Pattern B
5) The perspective of the narrator claims that Susan B. Anthony is an effective leader in fighting for women's rights today from her actions done many years before she could live to see it.
