A Narrative Essay is the type of essay that tells a story. The author or narrator of the essay tells their story based on personal experience and memorable events; however, it does not have to be necessarily a story based on the author's experience, it could also be various stories heard from a third party.
ReplyDeleteTelling a story from a third party point of view would also make a good essay too. It doesn't all have to be the same. Everyone has their own unique style of writing, and sharing stories is just the beginning.
DeleteDefinitely, narrative essays don't have to be from experience. It could just be from the writer's imagination.
DeleteYou forgot to specify which topic you'd choose for your narrative essay. However, I really appreciate your definition, because I didn't even consider a third party p-o-v.
DeleteIf you're able to write about stories heard from a third party and still draw the reader's attention, that to me is a great writer. For me, it's easier to write about something from experience because I'd have a lot of interesting information to talk about. However, if you're able to provide just as much interesting information on a story based on imagination or by a third party's perspective, that story would show just how great of a writer you can be.
DeleteThank you for reminding me, Monica. :) It totally slipped my mind since I posted this while attending the face to face session over Moodle. As for my topic, I would have to choose the event that marked a turning point in my life. Choosing a topic based from a personal experience would help me in writing or telling the actual details of the story rather than hearing it from a third party.
DeleteI agree, when writing a narrative essay it doesn't have to be from experience but we can also use our crazy imaginations.
DeleteI second Young's agreement about the imagination thing. Also, various stories from a third party? That's the first I've heard of that! I'll probably have to look up examples of narrative essays later. Interesting definition!
DeleteI agree with you too. Sometimes I like writing my narrative essays based on not personal experiences, but rather a made up story because you can tell the story however you want.
DeleteI agree with Young as well. It doesn't have to be a personal experience, you can make it up as you go along. Creativity is key when writing a paper.
DeleteA narrative essay would be a genre of an essay that allows the author to explain and describe something. It allows the author to give a description of something in a plethora of ways about their own personal experience. I would write about the topic, "a sad day in life" because I can relate and know that I could write a good descriptive essay about it.
ReplyDeleteTrue, narrative essays explain and describe things, but they shouldn't be confused with descriptive essays. Narrative essays do describe events or ideas, but mainly emphasize the story or plot of the essay.
DeleteI notice that you drew attention to narratives being specifically about personal experience. However, I question if narratives can be written from a rather non-personal point.
DeleteI wasn't quite sure what plethora meant so I looked it up. I actually learned a new word today. I too can relate to that topic. Good luck on writing your essay.
DeleteA Sad Day In Life is a good topic to write about. Everyone has those sad days and so it would be easy for a reader to relate to you. I do happen to agree with Gelmae here. A descriptive essay can easily be confused with a narrative essay. We all need to keep in mind the distinct differences that each essay possesses.
DeleteA Narrative essay doesn't necessarily have to be a descriptive essay. Although, a few elements of it may be utilized, the components of a narrative essay still differs. A descriptive essay has a more direct use of our five senses, while a narrative essay focuses more on the different emotions through a sequence of events in a story.
Deletework for today is really understanding and detail. Finally i know the different drafting, outlining, and organizing. The narrative will be done before do date and I will make the it good for everyone. well this if i have more i will let you know and reply them . this is Chris
ReplyDeleteA narrative essay is a form of essay that tells a story. It could be from different point of views, but is commonly the writer's. These types of essays usually consist of a plot, characters, and is told in sequence. I haven't chosen a topic yet, but when I finally do, It'd be one I relate to the most and build from that.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on finding a topic for your essay. Once you find one that you can relate to, your story will fall into place.
DeleteYes, it's a good idea to look at your options to choose a topic. When you find some youre interested in, we can put some brainstorming techniques to use and finally come up with the best topic for your narrative essay. That way, we'll find what feels most personal to you.
DeleteI hope that you find the topic for your essay soon so that you will have more time to work on it. I also find it easier to write about something that I can relate to. When you do that, you have some information on the topic so you won't feel completely lost. You also are more interested and invested in writing the essay as opposed to working on something that you know nothing about. So, good luck on finding your topic.
DeleteI agree I think our topic should be one that we can relate too so we can really put down information for our plot.
DeleteI hope you find a good topic to write! I'm still trying to see if I can build up from my descriptive essay topic. Maybe the narrative essay topic will go a little easier on me, since it seems more fun to write a narrative.
DeleteA narrative essay can be a personal or informative story. It should have a purpose. Also, it should be written from a clear point of view and concise language. I'm not sure what topic I should write about. Most likely, it will be about an experience that I had because I can remember the events that happened.
ReplyDeleteI agree, narrative essays should have a purpose and should be written clearly. It is so the reader to easily picture what the essay is trying to portray.
DeleteAn experience that you had would be a great topic to read in an essay. It allows the readers to picture themselves there experiencing it with you because you'd be describing a lot of details. I love reading personal stories because it allows the reader to connect with the writer through their story.
DeleteYou are very right. A lot of people overlook the fact that a narrative essay does not have to be personal. I also agree that an essay should always have a purpose. If the essay has no purpose then it is not an essay. It is nothing without a purpose.
DeleteI agree with you, Reticia. Basing a narrative essay from a personal experience narrows down our sources to our memories alone. Although that might sound a bit unreliable at times, our mind remembers what we want to remember, thus allowing the author or narrator to write about what really matters.
DeleteI agree by using a personal experience to write your essay. You'll be able to give your own "taste" to the story and give the reader what you think about a specific happening/event.
DeleteNarrative essays, in my opinion, are the best kind of essays to read because it tells a story. It is often told in the author's point of view. The author of this type of essay can become very creative in his or her writing. I would choose the topic "an encounter that changed your life" because I feel that I have a lot to write about on this topic.
ReplyDeleteToday's lesson in class, we learned how to organize our supporting material when writing. I've learned about this back in high school so I was very familiar with it. It really makes a difference in your writing when you organize your thoughts first.
I agree that narrative essays are very appealing to read. it gives you the chance to be creative and tell your own story.
DeleteI also enjoy reading narrative essays the most. I love reading the author's creative style of writing when reading narrative essays. I also enjoy reading novels where the writer is talking about him/herself in first person because it puts you in their shoes.
DeleteI also agree that narratives are the best to read because it isn't like you have to interpret anything too formal or fancy in vocabulary. It is simple and personal. It's more like talking to a friend than reading from a textbook.
DeleteI agree with you that narratives the best to read because they are more enjoyable. You could learn from the writer's experiences and even get ideas to write your own narrative essays/stories.
DeleteThey really are the best essays to read because you get to learn much more from another person's life. It's like they're telling you their story.
DeleteI too love to read narrative essays. The story allows you to experience something that you might not be able to do in real life. You are taken into a different world that is filled with creativity and imagination. You get to live in someone else's shoes even if it's just for a short period of time. It truly is an amazing experience to just be able to read a narrative essay.
DeleteIndeed it is. I remember a homework where I have to read, annotate, and summarize 7 parts and one chapter each of Edith Hamilton's "Mythology", I wrote a really verbose and lengthy summary that was basically a paraphrase of each line from each story. I then figured out an easier way to summarize, and that is by writing a narrative essay. I wrote from my my memory, from what I remembered from the story, and although it was not as detailed nor was it personal, the most important things or parts were present. It made reading the summary much easier to comprehend.
DeleteA narrative essay is a self-told story written in a rather formal format in order to get across an important point. Most importantly, it's an essay written from YOUR own point of view, so you can use "I" because it's a personal work. If I were to write a narrative essay, I'd write about an event that marked a turning point because it's something I could write very knowledgably and passionately about, but it would also have an important point to it. I could write about it completely from my own perspective and it would have a strong purpose that makes worth reading for my readers.
ReplyDeleteI really love the way you explain things. You're quite amusing in class.I would love to read your essay because I feel like it would be very interesting.
DeleteWriting narrative essays would have a strong impact on the readers, especially when writing about something from your own personal experience or perspective. When you write about something like that, usually your writing is more passionate and filled with a lot of detail. With that being said, it makes the essay a lot more interesting and enjoyable to read.
DeleteI can see where you're coming from and I totally agree. If I were to write an essay, I'd probably be using the word "I" most of the time, and really try to describe to my audience as much detail as I can.
DeleteMiko, you don't have to be so detailed, what matters really matters is that you don't leave out the important parts of your story.
DeleteA narrative essay is an essay where the writer can tell a story. Usually, it's written from the writer's experience and from the writer's point of view. You can also write a narrative essay based on fiction and get even more creative when writing the story. A narrative essay I would most likely write about is an experience that led me to a renewed faith. I think that topic is something I can write a narrative essay well because I'd be telling my point of view of the story and I'd be able to share what I experienced with the reader as if they were there experiencing it with me too.
ReplyDeleteI too find it easier to write about my own personal experiences. I feel that people get an insight into my life when it is written in my point of view. When they read my essay, they get a feel of who I really am. In return, I always hope that they get something out of what I experienced. Whether it be helpful to them or causes them to get angry, I just want readers to feel something when they read my work.
DeleteI can say that the descriptive essay would work well for most writers, even beginners, because they can tell their own personal story. They already know what they'll be writing about. It won't be some paper that they have to research about, they already know it, and have experienced it.
DeleteExperience can play a very big role in writing a narrative essay. By using your own experiences, you validate your essay more than by simply telling a fictitious story. Its always best to go off of personal experience. It allows the reader to get closer to the writer and to form a better connection and level of understanding.
DeleteI really like how you stated that a narrative essay can also be fictional to captivate the readers. Nearly everyone here said that a narrative essay is one that tells a story, usually from experience; however, they haven't mention about it being something made up. Don't be afraid to be creative on your essays, guys! It may be harder than writing from actual experience, but it's way more fun!
DeleteI find narratives more appealing when they are fictional because it the writer gets more creative with his or her work knowing that the story is being made up.
DeleteIn my opinion, a narrative essay is basically a regular essay with added commentary. It's pretty much just an essay with an added one sided conversation with the reader included. Well, at least that's what I (without looking at an actual definition) think it is. As for today's lesson, didn't we just went over what we learned about organizing details? I remembered that we learned about it during the first or second week of class; today we just reviewed that a bit more, right?
ReplyDeleteYes I agree. It also is a bit easier to write a narrative than the other types of writing because all you have to do is tell a story.

ReplyDeleteI believe that a narrative essay allows a writer to use their creative imagination to convey a story. It is the one essay that grants the writer the ability to share their thoughts and experiences through stories that readers can appreciate. When writing this kind of essay, one must be able to creative a movie in a reader's mind. People should be able to fully imagine and understand the story that is unfolding before them. If I were to write this kind of essay, I would write about a difficult decision that I had to make. I chose that topic because everyday, many people are faced with making difficult decisions, so I know that a lot of them would be able to relate to my essay. When writing this, I will definitely use the skills we learned in class, which are listing, clustering, and outlining. I know that they will help to creative a clear and flowing essay.
ReplyDeleteYou chose a good topic Ritacia. It is something that we can all relate to. I also agree tat a narrative essay needs a great deal of imagery. You need to put the reader in your place so to speak. Get them to experience what you experienced. A narrative essay needs to be entertaining or at the very least attention grabbing.
DeleteA narrative essay is an essay that would have a plot with characters it allows the writer to use his thoughts and opinions in a story. I would write about difficult decisions as well because everyone has there own days.
ReplyDeleteDifficult decisions, although a very safe topic to choose from, can be very interesting since it provides endless ways to write the essay. Nice topic, I'm sure your essay will be very interesting. A lot of people will be able to relate to this sort of thing, since everyone has experienced difficult decision making.
DeleteA narrative is also like a play written down. Just like a play, it has characters and a plot.
DeleteA narrative essay is an essay where the writer is telling a story. I really enjoy writing narrative essays. It allows the writer to be a bit more creative and explore different ways of telling a story. Narrative essays are generally written in the first person point of view, but not always. My narrative essay will be on "A Memorable Journey" because there is so much that could be said about a memorable journey that I am sure I will not have trouble telling a story about it.

ReplyDeleteA narrative essay is a story narrated by the writer. These stories could be fictional or nonfictional depending on the writer. I find this type of essay to be the most easiest to write because you explore the creative mind. You would include your own intro, plot, characters, setting, climax, and conclusion. The good thing about it, is that the story doesn't have to be realistic. You could make things up the way you want.
ReplyDeleteA narrative essay is it exactly what it sounds like, something that you should narrate and tell as a story. Where you dig down deep and find your inner Poe or Stephen King. A narrative is more complex than most essays because you have to tell a story and set the tone and the mood, but you have to do all of this without really speaking. The story should tell itself in your work, the reader should be able to feel your pain when they told you they ran out of cotton candy at the county fair or your happiness when you held your sister's daughter in your arms for the first time. A narrative essay is dependent completely upon the writer, as most works are, but the reader is depending on the writer to play a movie in their head when their reading the lines off the paper.
