An expository essay is basically that five paragraph essay you would use to explore/investigate an idea/topic and make it more understandable. In my perspective the steps that are stated in the link are really good steps to make you write the almost perfect expository essay. From a clear, understandable thesis statement and having clear transitions onto the next paragraph, evidence to support your statements, these are all good directions to make you have that darn good organized essay. Nobody would like reading a sloppy false essay. The expository topic I would choose is "Describe the major stresses in 'teen' life." I feel I could relate to that and write a pretty good expository essay on that topic.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. No one likes reading sloppy essays, which is why the tips we are learning in class are so crucial; It helps us write better in our essays.
DeleteI for one wouldn't like to read an essay that is all over the place. I think your topic is a really relatable one and it would be easier to write about.
DeleteI agree with you. The link gives you a good clear description of exactly how to write the perfect expository essay. I know for sure I will be going back to look at it while I write out my draft of the essay and most likely will use it in future classes that require me to write essays.
DeleteThose steps mentioned in the link will definitely help us in writing a very effective essay. I'm going to try my best to follow those steps so that I won't create a sloppy essay like you stated. Writing a messy essay won't help in discussing my topic. Also, I find your topic to be a great one to share with others. Most of us will be able to relate to it.good luck and have fun in your writing process!
DeleteI agree following those steps will definetly help write a better essay.
DeleteI also don't like reading essays that don't have smooth flow. It makes the essay less interesting.
DeleteAn expository essay could also be called a "research paper." It is a type of essay that requires you to research or investigate questions or idea, gather evidence, expand the idea. It explains something through facts rather than opinions. I haven't chosen a topic yet, but when I finally do, It'd be one I am interested in the most.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it is basically a research paper. I think that's what makes it an easier type of essay.
DeleteGood luck on finding your topic. I'm still trying to figure out what mine should be. You're right about it being a research paper since 'informative' pretty much means to inform, which is the purpose of a research paper.
DeleteIn response to your definition of a "research paper," I think I'd like to disagree with that one. Research papers are very cut dry and based on facts. The whole point of expository essay is EXPOSING the main idea...not just a generic paper.
DeleteThe purpose of an expository essay is to inform, define, or describe an idea, subject, or topic. This type of essay mostly uses facts rather than opinions. The basic five paragraph essay is commonly used for writing expository essays. The topic I would choose to write about is "describe the major stressors in teens' lives" because I, as a teen, stress out about many things.
ReplyDeleteIn today's lesson, we learned about writing and revising the first draft of an essay. After using a form of organization, we can finally start writing our essay. It is important to follow your outline, list, or cluster so that the essay is well written and organized. When revising, check for coherence, use of language, unity, emphasis, support, and sentences. Also known as CLUELESS. Revising an essay can make the content clear and well understood.
I agree about the importance of revision. It makes our writing more clear and organized.
DeleteI think that jist having CLUELESS in mind, you will be able to write a good essay. Using these steps correctly is important to becoming a better writer.
DeleteAlso, you cannot forget about COPS (capitalize, omission, punctuation, and spelling).
DeleteI really appreciate the "clueless" tip. More than anything, I think I need to remember to check for coherence, If I don't, I find later that I didn't really make sense. I do feel like these tips will better me in my writing skills.
DeleteI agree revising our essay is probably one of the most important things to do
DeleteAn expository essay is basically an informational essay. It is used to define or describe an idea. It also requires that you investigate an idea and evaluate the evidence, then conduct an argument concerning that idea. You can use cause and effect, compare and contrast, definition, or example. It also uses facts instead of opinions. I would write my essay on this topic: describe the major stressors in teens' lives. I know a lot about this topic, therefore I think I could write a good expository essay.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. It is an informational essay. I think you would be able to write a really good essay with the topic you chose.
DeleteI like the topic you chose. Being a teen is stressful. I know you can write a lot about this topic.
DeleteI also like the topic you chose. It is something a lot of our peers can relate to. I'm sure we've all had our stressed out moments. I like the fact that an expository essay uses facts instead of opinions. It means that the writer must attempt to hold a neutral tone throughout the essay. They can't let their personal feelings get in the way of their writing.
DeleteI like the topic that you chose. I feel that it is a very braod subject with a lot of options. You can make it very general or very specific, and the cool thing is that it is a bit of a controversial subject. It has all the qualities of a great topic for an expository essay.
DeleteI think that the topic you chose is great. Many of us would definitely learn a thing or two once we read your essay. There are a lot of things that stress teens out so I know that you won't run out of things to say. It will be very interesting to read because I know that a lot of us will be able to relate to it. Stress just seems to be inevitable.
DeleteFor me, I like using cause and effect and compare and contrast when writing an expository essay. I feel like I can write better and ideas flow easily through my mind.
DeleteAn expository essay is an essay written to expand a topic of your choice by explaining, analyzing and describing it furthermore by providing factual information and evidence. In writing an expository essay, I would choose the topic of why teenager's commit suicide. This a heavily broad topic that I could easily collect data on through surveys, observation, research, and can conduct arguments based on the main cause of their emotional depression.
ReplyDeleteWith a topic like suicide, it'd be interesting to see your research and thought process into it. I wish you luck with sorting out the hefty amount of sources you'll find in regards to the reasons for suicide (:
DeleteI would be really interested in your essay because of the topic you chose. It is a pretty heavy topic, but there is a lot to write about.
DeleteAnother reason as to why I chose this topic is also to satisfy my curiosity. I've passed the stage of being a teenager, and I'm very grateful that I did not have any thoughts of depriving myself from life. Having this chance to conduct research on it will give me a new perspective on how differently unique each one of us deals with day to day problems, and life changing choices.
DeleteI think that topic is very relatable because we prabably all knew someone who committed or thought about comitting suicide. I'm curious as well when it comes to finding out the reasons why.
DeleteThat is true Shar. We all knew someone who has committed or thought of committing suicide. This topic is interesting especially when you hear other people's stories.
DeleteI am interested in reading your essay once it is done. I think that this is a great topic to expound on because suicide is one of the leading causes of death. We could all learn something from your essay. I'm sure that we all know at least one person who has at least thought of committing suicide. It is something that needs to be addressed.
Deletei agree I think writing an essay on something that your able to collect a lot of data for will be a great way to start and if your able to organize it. You'll hopefully see results.
DeleteI feel like an expository essay is almost the same as a research report. One has to gather information about the topic they choose, analyze them to figure out if the material is concise, and provide supporting evidence to back up their statements. Unfortunately for me, I can't figure out a topic for my expository essay. I'm way too busy trying to come up with words to write for the descriptive and narrative essay. Hopefully, this barrier won't hinder me for too long.
ReplyDeleteAs for today's lesson, the one that I remembered most about was the tone used in writing. Certain words have to be chosen and structured in a way that emits the type of tone the author wants the readers to imagine.
Determining the tone of the author was one of the easiest box to fill out when I was doing book reports back in high school. The author's word choice definitely plays a significant role in doing so.
DeleteAn expository essay is like a research report because you gather and discuss information that is factual. Tone is important because the reader needs to know how the writer intended their work to sound.
DeleteSeeing this response, I'd really like to stress the point that research papers cannot have opinions, only quotes, statistics, and facts. Expository essays should be much more personal. Yes, you must gather pertinent information, but you're also giving it a little bit of your own taste. You are able to write from YOUR perspective, not the canonical or unbiased views like you must for a research paper. However, you are able to do that with tone, so it seems like you'll end up heading in the right direction anyway.
DeleteGood luck in finding a topic for your expository essay. I chose a topic for mine but I too am scrambling to get all the other essays done or at least create a foundation for them. In my opinion, I think that this essay will be the most fun to write. We will be able to get to do a little research and provide some insight as well. I always enjoy learning new things so this writing this essay will be satisfying.
DeleteI feel the same way. Most expository essays I've done in the past required me to do some extra research on my topic to explain it much better.
DeleteAn expository essay is the same as an informative essay. In this type of essay the author explains, describes and informs to the readers in his or her writing. Expository essay is not only about discussing a topic but also giving a better and concise information to the readers. As for the topic of my expository essay i choose "why teens commit suicide?" because it is one of the major concern in teenagers of this generation besides teenage pregnancy, drug use, and alcohol addiction.
ReplyDeleteSimilar to Maiko's reply; It's be interesting to hear your thoughts and what information you had found regarding the many reasons teens commit suicide. Suicide is so controversial, so I also wish you luck sorting the info into info you could use.
DeleteI'm kind of excited in conducting this research, since I myself will benefit from all the information we'll be able to gather. Maybe, if successful enough, we can process a solution and alternatives to engage teenagers in more productive activities and social programs that would allow them to use their energy to something more beneficial for them, like saving their lives.
DeleteI honestly think this is my favorite type of essay. It is an informative essay with factual information. I think expository essays are important because they cover real-world problems and inform reader's based on real information and actual research.
ReplyDeletethat's true Angie. A lot of essays have the option of being fictional. This is one essay where you get down to the real stuff. There's no room for exaggerations or fibs. I honestly prefer a more creative, free reign essay but I do enjoy writing an informative essay every once in a while too.
DeleteWhile I agree that they are important, I find them very hard to accomplish. The author has to go through a researching process, which could take days to do. Then they would have to verify that the information they have gathered is absolute, which is hard because people have differing opinions. Then a bunch of other steps that I can't think of at the moment.
DeleteI suppose that some people are better at it than others, though. Since you mentioned it's your favorite essay, it should be fun for you to do!
I also agree with Krizel. Expository essays aren't my favorite to write about because it takes much more time and work to make an excellent paper since your facts from your research must be accurate.
DeleteAn expository essay defends the author's point or idea of an argument with supporting details such as statistics, quotes from important figures, or other known facts. If anything, it's comparable to a debate topic in formal writing. The topic I'd choose would be "Why teens wear makeup," because it is something I feel very personally and strong about, but also because I can go to other people, ask them and quote their opinions. Additionally, I could research other supporting factors by using the media (especially teen magazines) or using statistics via internet.
ReplyDeleteI was gonna choose that topic, because I myself started wearing make up when I was 16, but nowadays, I've noticed the age brackets of teenagers wearing make up fall to the earliest stage of their puberty. I'm sure the media contributes a great deal in this, but I know there's more to see behind those young, and younger faces.
DeleteI think an expository essay is like a science project. Because it requires us to research an idea, evaluate the facts, give the details of the idea, and sorta make like an argument about the idea supporting it with what you have researched and evaluated.
ReplyDeleteI think of it as a science project as well because of how you evaluate and present arguments about the information.
DeleteNow that you mention it, it is like a science project. You have a topic that you need to research on, do some tests, and come out with the results.
Deletewow! I never thought of an essay like that, but you're right. When it comes down to it, this essay really is a science project of sorts. I think that looking at the essay from that point of view is very creative and would be easier to understand.
DeleteNicely put! Usually, science projects almost always have visual diagrams or models to help the audience understand how something works. You can't have those kind of privileges on an essay, so I guess you could say that an expository essay is more challenging than a normal science project.
DeleteAn expository essay is a research report. You find a topic, get information and write an essay. In expository essays you have to give details and support those details.
ReplyDeleteAn expository essay is an essay that requires you to examine an idea or topic. When writing an expository essay you need to study and do research on the topic you want to write about. You need hard facts in order to support the idea or topic. You need to go in depth on the ideas. In my expository essay I would like to explain why I admire my mentor. There is so much I could say and because I know him personally I can get the facts about his life and his experiences first hand and quite easily.
ReplyDeleteAn expository essay is an essay where a person evaluates an idea or topic and creates an argument based on that idea in a comprehensive way. I would write an essay about why parents are sometimes strict. There are many things where I can write about parents, particularly good and bad ones. It's an interesting essay to write about.
ReplyDeleteAn expository essay is an essay in which a person goes into detail to explain an object or idea. This is done by using credible facts and information. This type of written work requires much research and evidence. If I were to write this type of essay, I would discuss why I like (or do not like) to work in a team. I chose this because I have noticed that there are many advantages as well as disadvantages when doing group activities. I would like to expound on this and share what I find to other people who have noticed this as well.
