Visit URL: http://mnrivera1.com/Four_Major_Essays.pdf In your own words, discuss what an argumentative essay is. View the topics listed. Discuss which argumentative topic you would select and why? Please note that this will also be reviewed for Test #4. Further reflect on today’s overall activities.

  1. Argumentative essay sounds similar to expository essay, which is very confusing. I myself prefer to call it persuasive essay, because then I can tell the difference. Persuasive essays have almost the same process as expository essays, with research and evidence involve. But I think the main difference is that persuasive essays have topics that the author is defending, or proving wrong.

I still have no idea what topic I should choose for my persuasive essay.

Today, we talked about defining a paragraph. We used pattern A and pattern B sentences as examples to distinguish the type of sentences for each other. Pattern A has a topic sentence and supporting ideas, while pattern B involves having a topic sentence, supporting ideas, and a concluding sentence.

    1. I agree with you that argumentative essays are similar to expository essays and it may be confusing to some. In differentiating the two essays, I believe they vary on the amount of research and how in-depth or intensive the topic becomes throughout the essay.

    2. I got confused at first as well, but there is a big difference in the amount of research that is needed.

    3. You not the only one who gets confused between the two essays. I sometimes do the same as well. It is easy for a person to mistake an argumentative essay for an expository essay and vice versa. I think it is because the only difference between the two is that an argumentative essay need extensive research and credible information. That is how you would distinguish the one from the other.

  2. An argumentative essay is a type of essay that investigates a topic, collects evidence, and establishes a position on that topic. It is similar to the expository essay, but the amount of pre-writing and research needed for both essays vary. Argumentative essays generally call for intensive research, while expository essays calls for less research and are usually short. The topic I've decided to write an essay is about the idea of using death row inmates as subjects for medical testing rather than animals. Animal testing is controversial enough, and It would be interesting to see explore other perspectives about usable subjects for medical testing.

    1. I like that topic as well because there are very extreme points in that argument.

    2. I thought that you picked a great topic to work with. I think that you'll definitely enjoy researching the facts for your essay. It is something so interesting and so controversial. Your essay will surely catch the attention of many people. I was going to choose this topic as well but decided against it so I'm glad that someone else is going to write about it.

    3. You're description about the difference between argumentative essay and expository essay is better than mine.

Aside from that, I have to admit that your topic is very interesting. I haven't thought about what if people on death row were to be subjected to being guinea pigs rather than waiting on a count down. I remember reading from a book that prisoners on death row spend most of their time in solitary confinement, going over their case to see if they can find a loophole from the death row thing.

      Good luck on your essay!

    4. Argumentative essays will require a lot more research than any other essay in my opinion. It would also be the most time consuming essay to write for me, only because I think it would be difficult to freewrite about the topic at the top of my head. The topic you picked is really interesting though, I'm looking forward to reading about what kind of research and support you put into your essay.

    5. I think the topic you chose is especially intriguing and I'd like to see what information and details could support any opinion you could take on that. It is a very controversial idea so I'm sure that there could be a lot of passion in writing about this topic. Also, I feel that this topic is politically intense so I know that the research for the topic will have to be kicked up a notch.

    6. Great topic choice! I have done an argumentative essay about it in the past. I'm sure you will find a lot of facts to help persuade the opposing audience.

  3. Today's discussion taught me that there can be two different kinds of patterns in making a informative essay. The pattern A&B can be used when making a research paper about a subject and can prolong the paper to be a use to other people when others want to know more of the subject.

    1. The two different patterns we discussed today are sure to help us in the future. I was telling Angelin earlier that I was definitely going to use these two patterns when I write my essay for out upcoming test in October. Today's lesson was a really good refresher on how to write an essay. I know that it will make a big difference in the way I write my paragraphs now.

    2. Yes, there are different kinds of patterns in writing an essay, and today's lesson helped us with learning that. Not only will it help us on our Test's essay, but on our future works and assignments too.

  4. An argumentative essay can be described as a style of writing that requires the writer to investigate a topic of his/her choice. After you must then collect, generate, evaluate evidence and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner in an essay. Argumentative essay is also used to persuade our audiance to adopt new beliefs or behavior.

    1. It is pretty difficult to persuade the opposing audience to change their mind. They may throw other facts to you to argue about. From there, the argument may go on.

    2. Yes, argumentative essays are used to try to persuade the reader to see the stance or position the writer takes about a particular subject or idea and hopefully get them to agree or adopt your belief.

  5. An argumentative essay, or persuasive essay, is one in which you explore a topic and state your position about it. It involves a lot of research, which helps you to understand all the different points and support a side with collective evidence.
I'm not sure what topic I am going to choose yet.
Today's lesson was really short, but it was a good refresher on writing a paragraph.

    1. I hope that you find your topic soon. There were a lot of really interesting topics that were on that document provided to us. With that in mind, I don't think you'll have a hard time figuring out which one you would like to research. It is always best to go with something that you are passionate about. It seems to be more enjoyable and easy when you are greatly interested in the topic. Good luck!

    2. I agree about the lesson being really short today, but truth be told, my brain would have fried if it were any longer. Since we have an upcoming exam that requires us to study all that we have learned in the beginning of the semester AND do an essay. The test isn't until the week after next, so we still have more things to study for it. Oh joy.

    3. I think when writing an argumentative essay it's also good to see the other side of the argument when doing your research. It is important to understand all the different areas of the topic just in case someone tries to argue back at least you know some facts about their side and can counter argue with more support from your side. If you can write a good argumentative essay, you can potentially win the readers opinion and have them agree on your topic as well.

    4. The class session was pretty short, but it was enough time for us to understand the notion that there can be different ways or patterns to writing essays. With this, we can strengthen our skills in writing essays and assignments.

  6. An argumentative essay is an essay which requires the writer to explore more, look in detail, and investigate about a certain topic. This type of essay is very similar to a expository essay, but the difference is that an argumentative essay requires more work, collective data, surveys, and evidence towards it. I would do the topic about, "Cloning should be banned until necessary safeguards and precautions can be established to allow the research to be conducted safely and prudently." This topic would be a really interesting subject to research about and I know that this would be an issue in the future we would most likely face.

    1. I like the fact that you are thinking in terms of the future. Your essay topic choice should produce a very interesting essay. A lot of people get confused between these two types of essays easily, so thanks for clearing it up for the class.

    2. The main difference in the argumentative and expository essay really is the amount of research you put into writing the essay. With the argumentative essay you have to research all the facts and information to support your thesis sentence. You also have to make sure that all the information you're writing about supports what your thesis statement is about so the reader really believes what you are writing about.

    3. Interesting topic. I guess to a person who doesn't know much about the subject of cloning, it seems like it's a trivial matter. So I suppose that the people who you are trying to persuade are genetic scientists. With that in mind, you would have to make your essay geared towards people who know a lot about the subject of cloning, yet provide enough information about it so that any random person can conclude what cloning really is and why you say it should or should not be banned until the necessary safeguards have been established.

      Good luck on your essay!

  7. An argumentative essay is an essay that addresses a serious topi or issue. In this essay the writer opposes or having a disagreement on the topic he or she is talking about. On the contrary, a persuasive essay is an essay that persuades or convinces the reader to agree in the on the writer`s opinion. For the topic I am still undecided between father having the same rights as the mothers, having a counseling before granting a divorce and cloning. Otherwise, today`s lesson was a bit short but full of information that when writing an essay having a pattern will be have better way to express a writer`s essay and organize.

    1. I was really surprised at how short our lessons have been becoming. I think that by establishing these two patterns today it will be easier not only to spot them in other writings, but to use them in our own writing as well. An argumentative essay however doesn't necessarily mean that you are disagreeing with the topic Ray. It really just means that you are arguing a point whether it be against or for the topic. Best of luck on your essay!

    2. I can see how you would mistake that argumentative essays are supposed to disagree with a topic. Truth be told, that's not the case. Nichole is right about her definition of an argumentative essay; it means that you are arguing about a point. Since you already know that people have their own opinions about a certain topic, an argumentative essay simply points out your opinion about the topic. Whether it be that you agree on it or not. Good luck on finding the right topic for your essay!

  8. I believe that an argumentative essay is a type of essay that requires much research and facts. Some may think that it is the same as an expository essay, but argumentative needs far more factual information. A lot of data is needed in order to support the subject of your writing. You must follow through with the argument you are presenting, stating all the facts needed for one to make their own opinion. If I were to write an argumentative essay, my topic would be based on whether drivers nationwide should not be permitted to use cell phones while driving (talking and/or texting). This has become a huge concern lately so I hope to address the situation.

Today's activities were somewhat easily comprehendible. It was nice to learn about something so simple at first glance, yet so altering in the writing process. It definitely gave me some insight as to how to write a paragraph.

    1. I agree that today was easy and understandable while at the same time helpful and refreshing. A lot of what we go over in this class are things that we learned before and so this refresher course is very helpful to me. I think your essay topic is a great one. All of us at one time or another have been guilty of using our cell phones while driving.

    2. I agree with you too. All the research and facts you gather will help make a strong argument, but of course, they must be accurate and convincing.

  9. In today's class we went over the basic structure of a paragraph ranging from the topic sentence to the development of the main idea up until the conclusion of said paragraph. This was good practice for when we write out the essay portion of our tests. To me, an argumentative essay is an essay in which the writer takes a certain view point on a topic and defends said topic to others. The writer must stand by their opinion and be able to support his or her reasons. When I write my argumentative essay I want to write about how "Fathers should be allowed the same treatment as mothers in family court decisions. Too
many times the mother is favored because of the "nurturing" stereotype." I agree with this statement and I can stand behind it which makes it easier to write about.

    1. The topic you chose to write about seems very intriguing. I don't know much about what happens in family court decisions. However, I do know that there are a lot of times when the father does not get a fair chance. A father's ability to take care of a child is overshadowed by a woman's capability to give birth and breastfeed. I know that there are many fathers in the world who are great at meeting their child's needs. Sometimes, a mother isn't always the best parent. Anyways, good luck with your research and writing.

  10. An argumentative essay is a type of essay that is suppose persuade the opposing audience to change their minds about how they view the situation. This type of essay is commonly used to address serious issues. To me, this may be one of the most difficult essay to write about because you must know the right tone to use and must have your facts accurate in order to persuade someone to change their mind, but sometimes in the end, the audience may still disagree with you. The topic I would chose to write about is "The classroom size of grades K through 5 statewide should be set at a maximum of 20 students." because I agree with it and want to do much more research about it.

Today's lesson in class was a bit familiar to me since I've learned it back in high school. I think that the most important part of writing an essay or paragraph is the support. It enhances the topic for better understanding. For me, I have trouble coming up with and introduction to my essays. It's where I spend most of my time writing and editing.

    1. The way you described the argumentative essay reminded me about debates in class where one side of the room is for one thing, while the other side of the room is for the opposite. I do agree though that an argumentative essay if written well enough can change the readers mind about how they feel. For example, if someone who doesn't think that the maximum classroom size should be 20 students in grades K through 5 reads your essay and you provide enough supporting facts and good information why it should be, you would have changed that person's mind about the whole situation just by them reading your essay.

  11. An argumentative essay is an essay that you have to provide a lot of facts and do a lot of research about to support your essay. When writing an argumentative essay you first state your topic and a thesis statement in the first paragraph, your evidence and support on what you are writing about in the body of the essay, and the last paragraph is your conclusion which should strengthen your thesis statement because of the support you provided on your essay. The topic I want to write about for my argumentative essay is "The birth control pill is more dangerous than the medical community has led us to believe
and should be removed [or restricted] from general consumption". I want to write about this because I was on the pill in the past and I want to know more as to why it is more dangerous.

Today's lesson was one of the easiest lessons I've done in the class so far. It was about the different parts of a paragraph and being able to identify in each passage what the topic sentence is, what the supports that follow the topic sentence are, and in some cases what the conclusion sentence is as well.

  12. An argumentative essay is to investigate a topic and obtain knowledge what your are arguing about. Providing necessary background information to support the main ideas is important to show understanding of the topic. Having clear and convincing evidence is needed to reach a common ground between the writer and reader.

  13. To me an argumentative essay is an essay where the author is basically arguing something that can be stated using facts, statistics, etc.. The author will give pros and cons over a certain argument while providing facts about it. I think that these types of essay will take a lot of time, and would also require to get facts hat are actually true and not just words/facts that are out on any website on the internet. The author would usually try getting the reader to side with the author in the argument.

  14. I had a hard time differentiating between the expository and the argumentative essay. However, I learned that the key difference between the two is that the argumentative essay requires much more details and more factual support. I think it should be much like a persuasive essay but more aggressive towards the opinion of the topic. For this topic, I would've chosen "The birth control pill is more dangerous than the medical community has led us to believe
and should be removed [or restricted] from general consumption." The reason I feel that this is a strong topic I could really argue about is...I don't actually know enough about this topic to take a stance but I know there's an abundance of websites I could use and read about how different people and orgaizations feel about this stance. From there, I'd be able to take a strong position on this debate and use both the agreeing and opposing side's information to build a strenuous foundation for my argument. Birth control is an extremely controversial topic in our society day as it's something I as a young adult can feel very heartfelt about knowing how my female peers could be affected by these ideas. In conclusion, there's a lot of evidence out there to either support or disagree with this statement which could really help strengthen my argument for the essay.

  15. The argumentative essay is an essay where you have to investigate about the topic; collecting, generating, and evaluating the evidence. the only difference between the argumentative and the expository essay is that the argumentative essay requires more research. I'm guessing you really have to dig deep down to get the required information to meet the criteria of an argumentative essay.
My topic would be , We should use death row inmates as subjects for medical testing rather than animals. I chose this topic because I could agree with it.

  16. An argumentative essay requires a great deal of research, considering the whole point of it is to argue in favor or against something. You need to do your research in order to establish your position on the topic and continue from there on. If I were to select a topic it would definitely be the ban on novels with explicit content in high schools.
