Reflection - Section 12 - Test #4 - Dec. 3

Discuss your thoughts regarding preparing and completing Test #4.

63 comments:

  1. Today in class, the people who did the take-home test for test 4 got a chance to share their essays to the class. I think there are some people who are doing the in-class test. Anyways, there are many interesting topics that were said. However, I think everyone was too worried about what they were doing or were about to do. I admit I'm one of them. Ever since the announcement of the blog points and attendance, that's all I thought about during the whole class time that I was there.

    1. I was worried about the blog points and attendance. I think that we all did well on this test. Everyone seemed like they did their research because they all sounded like they knew what they were talking about.

    2. I am pretty upset about my attendance, but I will see what I can do about it. As for the essays, I heard a few that were really good.

    3. It was great to hear that everyone learned from their research for their topic. You could tell that many of us were really passionate about our essays. It was also interesting to listen to the different standpoints from the same topic, like the birth control controversy. As for the attendance and blogging, that did not affect me as much. I knew that I was doing okay regarding those areas.

    4. I agree that we all seemed a little distracted today. I myself was a little worried because my stage one and two of the writing process was written out and not typed. I agree though that we all wrote about very interesting topics.

  2. Preparing for Test #4 took me about a week in advance because I wanted to make sure that I had enough information and that they were accurate. I prefer a test like this because it gives me time to diligently do research and put the whole paper together without rushing, I think that I was able to write a good argumentative essay, but I think I could have done better. This was actually my first time writing an essay like this. I think this type of test should have been done from the beginning because it would have really helped our writing skills.

    1. I should try that. Next time I will make sure to do the essay in advance.

    2. It is okay it took me a lot longer to finish my essay for test # 4. I had to find the right sources and information to create my essay. But good job on not giving up on your paper.

    3. I completely agree with you. I prefer take home tests as well. I do not feel pressured by time, so I get relaxed and more at ease. I don't worry that I'll forget important information because I always have time to double check if everything needed is included. I also worked on my essay about a week in advance. Doing this gave me the opportunity to work on the essay in increments instead of cramming to get everything done.

    4. I also prefer take home tests because it gives me more time to organize my thoughts and figure out what I want to say. This was my first take home test and I really liked it. It gave me the freedom to work on it whenever I wanted without the stress of sitting in a classroom.

  3. Preparing for Test #4 really had me thinking a lot about the topic I chose from the beginning. I made sure that I provided support and used examples that can relate. I prefer writing the essay and taking the test in class, which I took a few minutes ago, because it really allows me to focus and go deep into the essay I'm writing. I'm glad that there was plenty of time to brainstorm, free write, write the essay, and review. I'm hoping that the final will be pretty much the same thing as well.

    1. I think the experience was different for everyone. Personally, I preferred the take home option.

      Delete
    2. I like the take home option too, but I feel like I did not use it to my advantage.

      Delete
    3. I also preferred the take-home option. Although I spent exponentially more time on my essay than I would have during an in-class essay, I feel that I really worked towards the grade I wanted (an A) and gave myself the time I needed in order to do so. I'm glad you felt comfortable about writing the essay.

  4. Preparing for this test was kind of hard for me but I hope I made it through for the test. I think would have done better it I had prepared more. But when I came into class and we had to share, was getting worried because couldn't find my essay,so had to do the essay in class.

    1. I know how you feel. If I prepared more, my essay would of had a different outcome.

    2. I can say that it is harder to prepare your product if you do not have the right sources, outlining, and clustering. I had a hard time finding sources for my test and it was a lot harder putting then all into one essay. But I can say that I am glad to get that over and done with.

  5. In class, we each shared part of our essays. My thoughts on the test was that it is much better to do a take home test. I had enough time to write my essay. I did a few research, but I think my research was not helpful. How I prepared was that I started free writing. When I was done, I went back to review what I wrote.

    1. I agree, that it is better to do a take home test. I know people may think that it is cheating, but it is actually not. It helps you focus better and explore more into the topic without time issues.

    2. When I saw your essay, I thought it was sufficient. I think that you should try my method next time, but also find a way that works for you. I think it would help you.

    3. Time has always been an issue for me when I am expected to write any essay. It puts too much pressure on me and then I feel as though my writing did not reach its full potential. So having this take home test definitely helped to relieve the worries about not composing a decent essay. I was allotted enough time to write what needed to be said and then still have time to revise any issues that were found.

  6. I was one of the people in class who voted for take home test. Having a take home test really helps in reducing my test anxiety. I was able to do my research days ahead, dividing it and bookmarking my online resources. I also did not have to stress so much on trying to memorize my essay word for word, because I could just edit it and proofread it any time I want. I was also able to run my essay through a grammar check site where it checks any errors, plagiarism, etc. that enabled me to improve my essay further.

    1. I get test anxiety too and this take home test really did help. From what I heard in class, I think you can write very well. We had the same topic and I felt intimidated and like mine wasn't good enough compared to yours. I felt I could have done better, but yours sounded great.

      Delete
    2. I also get test anxiety sometimes, especially knowing that there will be an essay involved. The take home test reduced my stress. Also, I never knew there was a site that reviews essays. I would definitely check that out some day.

    3. Hey Maiko, I really liked your essay today. I think that it was an interesting topic and I would like to hear more about it. I also voted for the take home test. I found that being in the comfort my own home was a big help when organizing my thoughts and writing my essay.

    4. Oh man, Sharleen, thank you, but I liked your essay too! You covered more on the care that America's citizens get compared to other European nations. I covered mostly on its costs. I know you did well on your essay, don't doubt yourself! :) Meryeil, you can go to grammarly.com . Nichole, thank you for listening. Take home test ftw. ;)

    5. Initially, I felt that I'd be more comfortable taking the essay in class so I wouldn't be stressing about it and spending countless hours on it at home, but in the end, I felt really relieved that I didn't procrastinate taking the exam in class, took it in advance, and ultimately worked towards the grade I wanted. I also agree with the editing part.

  7. I can say that I have faith in my work and that I have tried a lot to make this paper a good grade paper. It took me longer to create this essay and get sources too. I did my best in reading it and editing it as well. I can say I learned a lot from doing this essay. I learned how to conduct a essay of my interest and explore into that topic.

    1. I also hope that I did well on my paper. I spent a lot of time checking for mistakes and collected as much facts that I could. Good luck to you! :)

    2. I'm glad that you are proud of your work Mark. I always believe that I could have done better on anything that I do. It is one way that I push myself to always be better than I was before. I know I had a few minor errors, but all in all I believe that I did a good job as well. I agree that this essay took quite some time to complete because of all the research that had to be done.

    3. I also spent a lot of time on this essay than I did on the others. The main reason is because of the research we had to put in for this essay, but I didn't mind. I did learn a lot from this essay too, which I am thankful for. I liked learning new things about my topic that I had known before, especially because my topic was on birth control pills and that's something I was using in the past.

    4. im glad that you enjoyed doing this essay

    5. That is a great positive attitude that you are reflecting upon your work, Mark! It also makes me feel more positive to see that at least someone feels confident in their essay and makes me feel hopeful too. I agree that this essay definitely took much more time and energy than the last one. It isn't about the length for a strong paper like these...it required good content. Great work Mark.

  8. I think I was well prepared for this test, not just because it was a take home test but a while back I had done the wrong paper for class so I ended up doing this paper like a month before it was even due lol. It was all okay though because I was able to collect more feed back and tweak it in areas that needed more work than others so I'm grateful for that!

    2. I really liked how you referred to the classic books on your essay topic. I loved reading the classic novels. A few of my favorites are Fahrenheit 451, The Scarlet Letter, and the Great Gatsby. :)

  9. For test #4, I can say I was all prepared. I had my research done for my topic. I have my paper revised. I also love the fact that we share some of our in front of the class. Giving our classmates brief understanding on everyone's topic and how they tackle the topic that were given and make an argumentative essay from it.

  10. I was glad test #4 was a take home. It gave me more time to think about my topic and do a lot of research on it. I had my friend peer review it for me to make sure my essay was understandable. It made me confident in turning in my essay. Sharing our main points of our essay in class was great. Hearing different facts about our topics got me interested.

    1. I am glad that you were able to turn in your essay with confidence. It shows that you believed that you wrote a great essay. Good job! As for our class activities, the sharing that we did was definitely the best part of today. Hearing the stances of everyone on a certain topic was very insightful.

    2. I'm glad you had y our essay peer reviewed before hand. Peer reviewing really is good to get feedback before the final draft. I also enjoyed the fact we all got to share a little part of our essays in class. I was interested to hear about everyone else's topics and part of their research and support for it.

    3. I was confident in this test as well. It seems like we give ourselves more time to review our essays rather than sitting in class and having no choice but to just turn in your paper once you finished.

  11. I was so glad that Test #4 was a take home test. I was able to do extensive research and have enough time to create an essay to the best of my abilities. I do not think that I would have been able to remember all the facts and sources and be able to write it down on paper. Preparation was less stressful this time around, allowing me to complete my essay with ease. I hope that I will get a decent grade for all the hard work that I put into my writing.

    1. I was grateful that it was a take home test. Since argumentative essays require much more research on facts, it would have been a bit more difficult trying prepare to take it in class.

    2. I was also grateful about the test was take home, especially for this type of essay. Writing this essay took me a lot more time than what we would've had in class so I was thankful we were able to write it beforehand. I also felt this essay for me at least was the hardest to write about because of the amount of research we would need to do.

    3. I agree preparation for this test was less stressful.

    4. Seems like everyone is grateful that it was a take home test. Even our last test might be a take home test, which is awesome (:

  12. Preparing for Test four was pretty easy. I wrote about why the military should not use Pagan as a site for live-fire training and testing. I am very passionate about this topic, and all topics involving the CHamoru people, and so I found the research to be quite interesting. I really liked the fact that the essay was a take home test. It gave me more time to collect my thoughts and execute the main idea in a clear and straight forward manner. I have come to realize that a lot of my writings, even when I do not mean them to, come out sounding very poetic and emotional. I think that this is one of my strong points.

    1. I think the reason why your essay sounded like a poem is because your topic you chose is something you normally write about in your poetry anyways. I did enjoy reading your essay though, and I did think your support for your argument were done well. Good job!

    2. I would like to read your essay.

    3. That is one of your strong points, Nichole! It is your "style" of writing. Every good author, or composer has their own style, it's what differentiates them from others. Don't ever lose your style. ;) btw, did you got o ID180 class?

    4. Good to know you were very passionate about your topic (:

    5. You get to experience the debate first hand, because we live in Guam. Which is why the topic is very poetic for you. I bet this test was a piece of cake for you, since you're very passionate about the topic. So I definitely know that you will get a good grade!

  13. I had to spend more time preparing for this essay than the other three essays we had to do. This essay took a lot of work to research for my topic and find my support. My essay was about why birth control pills should be removed from consumption and I learned a lot when researching this topic. However, I'm just hoping my writing was done well for this test to reflect a good grade.

    1. True, it did take more time to complete because our topics needed to be researched. Although, being able to take our tests home and do it there made the stress less.

    2. I think we're all hoping that our writings were well done to get a good grade. I agree that we have a lot of time for this essay test, especially since it was a take-home exam. I just hate how sometimes my research don't turn up anything useful for my essay. Sure, they may be interesting to know, but they usually won't help with the essay unless they're related. Only a handful of my research was used in my essay.

  14. I think test number four was easy. it was either you do they essay at home or get your information and do it in class. I think you gave us a fair amount of time to prepare for this test.

    1. I rather do the take-home test than the in-class one. Unless I'm confident that I can remember the materials and exactly how to do the citations, I think take-home tests are more beneficial to us. It's like doing a very short research report. I kind of wonder if the way the citations are formatted impact our grades for test 4. I'm hoping that they don't, because I'm most likely to have formatted something wrong there.

      Delete
  15. I'm hoping that test 5 will be a take-home test as well. I hear that test 5 is going to be either one of the essay types that we already did. So I'm going to do a descriptive essay for test 5. The reason why is because I got a low grade on that test. If I do descriptive essay for test 5, then I'm sure to have a higher score than my first try!

  16. Late post: I didnt really do well on my test since I did take home but didnt get it. Stupid me since I forgot it at home and wasnt able to get it from home. In addition I did the same topic at least three other people did. And then there was the blog and grades. *sigh*

  17. I feel that I was well-prepared for this test. In preparation of Test #4, I pre-wrote my paper and my ideas according to my chosen thesis, which I attached to my turned-in essay. My topic was about how birth control pills are dangerous and should be restricted. Initially, I thought birth control pills were a great idea. I had known nothing except the benefits of being a birth control pill user. However, while writing this essay and doing the research, I learned that these pills actually are really dangerous; and maybe I shouldn't encourage the use of this contraceptive. While pre-writing my paper, I listed the requirements of an argumentative paper, I brainstormed questions about the topic such as who uses BC, what are the advantages, and what are the risks, and finally I outlined my paper. When I was finally able to write my paper, all I had to do was follow the outline and expound on the details and cite my support and I felt that my paper was good to go. I looked over my essay to search for mistakes and I don't think I missed it. However, I did not have my paper proofread or peer-edited because I feel that this was an exam and I felt like that would be cheating. I want the grade that my writing deserves...not someone else's. I am so thankful we had the option of a take-home test rather than the average in-class essay because I feel like I do not have enough time to capture the essence of my topic in an hour's span of writing.
