Reading, writing, and thinking go hand in hand. Interpret the quote above. In addition, share your thoughts about today's activities (handbook, essay brain stretcher, etc).

This course is an integrated reading and writing course that prepares students for further English courses and further study at the University.
I feel like this quote is a circle. You can't do one without the other. That is my interpretation of the quote. Today in class, there aren't a lot of people. We got to do our essay brain stretcher again. We didn't do anything on the handbook because we finished it last class. So we are working on our essays in class today.
ReplyDeleteYour interpretation of the quote is general, but straight to the point. Although I did not attend class today, I also starting working on my final essay.
DeleteI was not able to attend class today. However,I also started on my essay. I want to get as much work done as possible, so that I may enjoy the weekend before all my exams. I am a little disappointed that I missed out on an essay brain stretcher. I find those enjoyable because you are able to dive into your imagination and come up with creative stories with just one glance at a photo.
DeleteI agree with your interpretation, though I feel it isn't a full response. I was able to finish my essay in class thankfully.
DeleteI appreciate how short and straight to the point your post is! It's brief but it says all it needs to say about the quote, which I agree with!
DeleteLike most things in life, we learn things through baby steps. Writing well takes time and proper preparations. Without learning to read, you aren't able to write. Without knowing how to write, you aren't able to think as well, and everything else follows.
ReplyDeleteToday's class session was short as we already finished the whole textbook last class. The remaining time was useful as we finished our other assignments that needed to be completed such as our final essays and MyReadingLabs.
I like your interpretation of the quote above. It is simple and compared to how we learn things in life which makes it easy to understand.
DeleteGood interpretation on the quote. I think that everyone can relate it to how we learn things in everyday life.
DeleteClass was pretty short. But I'm glad that we got the extra time to work on our essays and whatnot. We also manage to see our scores for the MyReadingLab. I hope all goes well for all of us.
DeleteI agree we learn things in baby steps! The road to being an awesome writer is a tedious and worthwhile journey!
DeleteGetting ready for the exam and using the information we learned throughout the semester is just getting hard. With the few times I have to do some home works, I realized that keeping up with the myreadinglab is just really hard. Another brain stretcher just to get out of class, just needed to get out to have time to get ready
ReplyDeleteI agree. I felt that the myreadinglab was difficult to keep up with and time consuming. Although, I do think that it did help me improve on my reading skills.
DeleteI totally agree with myreadinglab. It is not that I am hating it, but it is really hard to keep up. Having a lot of things in mind is overwhelming. However, Sharleen is right it really helps to improve our reading skills.
DeleteMyreadinglab is overwhelming! It's just too much work to do honestly. I don't know how we are able to finish it by exam day.
DeleteI actually wrote about how scary MyReadingLab was on my finals self-reflection essay. I know it's supposed to help us, but making it such a huge portion of our grades makes it a little intimidating. I hope we don't have to go through that ever again. I guess we're unlucky to be in an EN100 class this semester, since this is the semester that they start enforcing MyReadingLabs in EN100 classes.
DeleteThe quote above means that it may be difficult to have stronger reading and writing skills if you do not read to write and write to read. Reading opens up your mind to creativity and gives you ideas to try out new writing techniques that can catch the readers' attention easily. As for writing, it encourages you to want to read similar topics or stories that you are creating.
ReplyDeleteI chose to do Moodle instead of coming in to class today. On Moodle, I discussed the importance of the handbook provided. It is a great source of reference that can be used throughout our college years when writing papers for any class.
At first, your interpretation was a bit confusing to me. After reading it a second time, I can understand what you meant and I think that how you said it is true.
DeleteI enjoyed your explanation of the quote. I never would have thought of it that way. I also chose to participate in the Moodle session instead of going to class. I found the Handbook to be very useful as well. I'm sure that I will be using it for future writings, so that I will be able to improve on my skills and techniques.
DeleteI agree with Ritacia! I also enjoyed your quote and I think it applies well to this. Because you really do need to read a lot, educate yourself with different writing tactics and skills and arm yourself intellectually as to perform well! :)
DeleteI can say that this quote is the truth to extending your abillity to construct a better you. It explains how a person who can do all of these things such as, writing, reading, and thinking can be a good writer. I can relate a quote that I myself created in high school. I always told myself and others to " Never Think Hard, Always Think Smart ! "
ReplyDeleteThis quote has not let me fail in life situations. I hope that this quote of mine can also inspire you to live with this quote. It has helped me greatly through high school and now collage.
Great advice quote! I never really thought about it that way. It will definitely inspire me. Thanks for sharing it. :)
DeleteThat is an awesome quote! I think that quote can inspire anyone who is willing. I wish I had known about that quote in high school. It would have made a difference in how I thought back then in high school.
DeleteI appreciate you sharing your quote on this blog with everyone. It'll really come in handy, especially with all the finals we're preparing for and other things in life we may face.
DeleteThank you for sharing such an inspiring quote with all of us. I hope that it will help me just like it has helped you. Just like Angelin said, I think that it will assist in alleviating some of the stress we have from preparing for final exams.
DeleteThank you guys for liking my quote. and i hope it inspires you well enough tohelp you get through your future.
DeleteI've only ever heard of "Work smart, not hard." so this is an interesting quote. "Never think hard, always think smart!" I guess it's kind of similar to the work smart, not hard one in a way.
DeleteThis quote states that we all need to think in order to write and read correctly. They work together while we think so that we can gain a better understanding. It's like baby steps. Once you learn how to write, you can read, and vice versa. It explains how anyone can be a good writer with the correct ability to think and combine what they have learned from their past experiences.
ReplyDeleteIts like our two feet. We need both our left and right in order to move forward.
DeleteWe are able to think, just very poorly without writing and reading.
DeleteI agree withwhat you are saying. I can not imagine if we did not have our two feet. It would make life harder and challenging to keep moving forward. But our feet is just a portion of what we need in life to keep moving forward. We also need or brain, the brain is what helps us learn what we need to learnin life. I can say that it gives us our way of thinking through situations we may encounter in the future.
DeleteThe quote sounds sort of like a "catch 22". Where you can't do one without the other. So I think that this is saying that in order to improve in one area like writing, you need to improve on reading as well. I totally agree with this quote because I believe it to be true. I would give this quote as an advice to anyone who wants to do better in reading and writing.
ReplyDeleteThe handbook was so interesting to me because of how much valuable information it had. I would definitely have it on hand when preparing my final draft of an essay.
The handbook did have many useful information. I also will be using it as reference when writing my final essay.
DeleteI agree. In order to improve in writing, you have to also make sure your reading skills is good as well because that's how you can check if your work was well written. Also, now that I think about it, the quote can be related to "Catch 22".
DeleteI had the same idea. I am also going to use the Handbook for writing any essays that I may be assigned to do. I am glad that we were provided with this useful resource. My writing will definitely improve with the use of the Handbook.
DeleteThe relationship between reading and writing is like the symbiotic relationship between a goby fish and a shrimp. The shrimp digs a burrow into the sand and both organisms live there. Because the shrimp is almost blind, the goby fish will touch the shrimp when a predator is near. The point here is, reading and writing comes together mutually. If you read well, then you will surely know how to write well, because you expand your vocabulary when you read new things. When you write, you read what you have written for confirmation and for correcting. All of these compiles to benefit the way you improve your skills in reading, writing, and thinking. Thus becoming better off. Just like the goby fish having a place to live in while the shrimp continues to live.
ReplyDeleteI like how you compare reading and writing to the mutual relationship of goby fish and shrimp. A very scientific comparison.
DeleteI like your comparison to the shrimp and a goby fish. It was very detailed and I saw your point from your inference. It reminds me kind of like another water relationship with a sea anemone and a clown fish. I also agree that all together they improve your skills as a writer.
DeleteI really enjoyed your comparison! I thought it sounded very wise and karate kid-ish! haha! But really, what you are saying is true because the two components really do good hand in hand and you won't be able to do one without the other!
DeleteThe relationship between reading and writing is like partnership. Without the other one, the other will suffer. It is like a couple or parents who`s going hand in hand to support and provide for the family. Without one of the help of the other, the other will have a hard time to balance his/her time to provide and support. Reading gives your mind a better understanding on how a better should be written. Then, writing helps your reading skills to find and correct the your writing.
ReplyDeleteI like your interpretation on the quote above, especially your reference to parents. I agree that reading and writing are a partnership, without one or the other then it's not complete. You would need to read to write, and write to read.
DeleteReading, writing, and thinking all go together. In kindergarten for example, we all learned how to write a lot better when we had to read and understand what we were writing about. As well as we learned to read a lot better when we wrote things down over again. Those two skills go hand in hand with each other and only make each other stronger.
ReplyDeleteYou can't have one without the other! I enjoy your interpretation. Not only do those skills make each other stronger, it makes learning and thinking easier.
DeleteGood example Ang! I never thought to take this so far back to where it all started. I agree though that the only way to learn how to read and write is to try and understand what it is that you are reading or writing. Good observation!
DeleteThey really do go hand in hand. You can't do anything without the other.
DeleteI like your reference to the process of learning reading and writing in Kindergarten. In fact, I stand by your statement that implies practicing writing repeatedly build improvement.
DeleteThe quote explains how the things you read affect the way you write. If you enjoy reading literary masterpieces, your writing will most likely improve. The brain needs a break from constantly reading what is posted on social media, which is usually composed of misspelled jargon. Reading a book every once in a while may counteract with the negative effects of reading grammatical errors every day. The quote also explains how learning to write improves your reading skills. The more you write, the more your vocabulary expands, which makes reading a lot easier. The brain stretchers are really helpful because I enjoy activities that fuel my creativity.
ReplyDeleteWell said, Summer. :)
DeleteI agree Summer! I love to read, and so by reading my knowledge of different topics grows. Now I am able to write about a variety of things. Because I read and write about numerous ideas, I can think about them clearly, and easily without getting confused.
DeleteI agree, the things you read will affect the way you write.
DeleteI agree, and to add on, everything becomes easier when you read books that truly interest you. So, not only do you learn and expand your reading and writing skills, you are also reading something you enjoy.
DeleteIn order to improve in your reading or writing, you must constantly practice those two elements simultaneously. Your skills must grow together in order to increase their strength. As you continue to practice this, you will be able to gain knowledge and experience. This will enable you to think back on what you acquired and help you apply what you know to future encounters.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I did not attend class, I still reviewed the Handbook and found it to be very informational. Many of the topics discussed teach elements that will help to improve our writing. It is a great resource to refer back to for future use.
Wow Ritacia! Way to go into detail there! haha I didn't attend class either. By the way, thanks for sending me that text message telling me to post online tonight! I was baking cookies for some of the men and women in the military who don't have any family here on Guam. I know, its not an excuse! haha
DeleteI agree. In order to improve in your reading or writing, you must constantly practice those two elements simultaneously. Your skills must grow together in order to increase their strength. As you continue to practice this, you will be able to gain knowledge and experience
DeleteI definitely agree. Practice makes perfect, but not just any practice. "Perfect practice makes perfect," is what others say and it goes with reading, writing, and effective thinking.
DeleteI think it is a god idea to practice both writing and reading in order to reach a maximum potential in literature and language arts. The handbook was very convenient and I am glad it included a small bit on fragments.
DeleteThe quote above is in a cycle. Leaving one out would interrupt the cycle and make everything else almost impossible to do. Reading, writing, and thinking all tie in together. Without reading or writing, thinking critically would become a greater challenge, and vice versa.
ReplyDeleteToday's only activity was to do the brain stretcher. It was fairly easy. I also used my time to finalize my final draft for the exam paper. So, kudos to me!
I can't wait to hear what you have to say in your final exam Kristen! I'm glad you enjoyed the brain stretcher. I wish I went to class, because that is one of my favorite activities to do there. I agree that without one of the three elements, in this case reading, writing, and thinking, then everything else is ten times as hard.
DeleteI agree, that quote is basically the circle of life in the English/Literature world. Leaving one out would interrupt the circle and make the other two impossible to do.
DeleteI can agree with you that the quote stated on top reflects on a circle of life dealing with English literature. It can also be a circle of understanding things in life and what to expect during your life span. It is a mear guide to what life holds in terms of reading, writing, and thinking.
DeleteHey, our interpretation of the quote is similar! Haha! I totally agree about that, we can't do one without the other. I, too, was working on my final exam essay. I think I was the last one to leave class, but I'm not sure if I even made any progress. I kept changing my topics for the essay.
DeleteYes, reading, writing, and thinking are all connected. You can't process information properly with the cycle being incomplete or broken.
DeleteAs a poet both reading and writing are a big part of my life. I really like this quote because it is so true. By reading books I expand my vocabulary. The new words that I learn though reading books that range from classic to modern literature, I apply not only to my writing, but to my everyday conversations. I often challenge myself to pull random words out of the dictionary and use them in a new poem I write.
ReplyDeleteI didn't attend the face to face class today, but I wish I had because I heard that we had another essay brain stretcher. I love doing those brain stretchers. It really works out your imagination, as well as your writing skills. I did go on moodle though, and it was nice to see that my peers not only appreciate the handbook, but also shared some of the problems that I had in the beginning of the semester.
I also did not attend todays class. If I knew there were going to be brain stretchers I would have came to class that day. :)
DeleteI think it's really cool that you write poetry and I'd like to hear it some time! Also, I think the quote has a valid point, but I cannot relate to it. I am glad that reading benefits your writing skill. I want to improve that skill as well. I love doing the brain stretchers too, but missed out as well.
DeleteIt can not be either one or the other, reading and writing is basically a team. The quote is basically telling you in the nicest way possible, You got to know hot to read if you want to know how to write, you got to know how to write if you want to know how to read, you got to know how to read and write if you want to interpret things properly.
ReplyDeleteI did not attend todays class.
I don't agree in the sense that they cannot be individualized. For example, I am a decent writer, but I am a horrible reader. I may be able to write with metaphors, perfect grammar, and organization, but I may not be able to sense inferences, new ideas, satire or hidden morals in readings. However, I do agree that being a better reader can make you a better writer.
DeleteI feel that this quote can be related to the popular saying, "it takes one to know one." I understad that this concept may appear random but what I mean is that..for example, you must understand what goes into a good book as a reader, in order to be a good writer. You have to understand both sides of the process in order to reach absolute potential. You may infer well while reading, which can assist you in making excellent inferences in your writing for OTHER readers. Additionally, the handbook is very useful. However, I do wish it was a bit shorter or more brief. I didn't attend class in-person to enjoy a brain stretcher.
