Reflection - Section 13 - August 27

Discuss your thoughts about today's activities.  (re:  Underlining, annotating, outlining, summarizing, etc.)

  1. Todays lesson seemed very helpful. I am use to underlining sections of writing. Though, I wasn't aware that I was "underlining too much." Outlining is very familiar to me, but I haven't used this technique in awhile, so understanding at using it was a good refresher. I have never used annotations, but I have seen it. I guess that was something new and interesting to learn. Overall the imformation we read today was very helpful not only for this class, but it can help me in other classes as well. Thankfully & hopefully I will be able to use this knowledge to help me with not taking appropriately.

  3. Todays lessons are helpful for my future essays. Underlining is something that I have used before and I am familiar with. I have never used annotating before and don't know what it is. Outlining and summarizing is something that is very familiar and I have used before for past essays and assignments. I hope this new knowledge will better my essays and future assignments.

    3. Amen! the techniques are definitely something new to me and I'm sure to MANY of us today. I especially like the idea of outlining our essays before we actually write them. The technique can really help in giving more ideas when it we actually write. It can also can also help to already make sentences we plan to include in our essay!

    4. Underlining is quite familiar to most of us, and I know how you felt with annotating, it was also the first I've heard of it. Anyway I also hope to fully utilize these techniques in my future essays.

  4. I was thankful for the lesson today. Most of the subjects discussed were not learned in my high school. Or at least it wasn't as detailed as it was in today's lesson. I have a better understanding on how to use underlining, using annotations, outlining and summarizing. Hopefully, it helps me to further my writing skills.

  5. We did a lot of reviewing today such as underlining, annotating, outlining, summarizing, etc. it was a good start for refreshing my memories and relearning the things I've already learned throughout my life in school. Underlining is something I never really ever did but I am pretty familiar with it. Annotating has always been in every single English book I've studied but never once did I do it myself. Outlining is a very common thing I do when it comes to essays and papers, especially research papers. Summarizing is always been simple and easy to do. I've also got to know some new people here in my class which is a great way to start my freshmen year. I'm hoping to get things down and memorized at the end of the semester.

  7. I thought today's activities on underlining, annotating, outlining, and summarizing were useful. I rarely use any of these techniques to help me write paragraphs or essays except for outlining. I feel that this lesson will help me to better understand what i read and write.

  10. To me, the topics we discussed today were very familiar but I seemed to have forgotten about them. I blame it on the very long vacation. Anyway despite this I had fun learning about them again. Underlining, annotating, outlining, and even summarizing we use some of these techniques almost everyday. Underlining and annotating when we read and review notes, summarizing stories or movies to tell our friends and outlining when we have to do research. I realized that we have so much more to learn about the English language. Hopefully in the coming months I'll be able to improve my skills in writing.

  11. Today's lesson was beneficial, yet traditional. Personally, I have a very short attention span so I've always used the technique for studying and reading literature because it helps me keep my focus and remember the main points. I liked that our class was able to share their answers for the "complete the outline" activity because it's interesting to find the differences of what people think is "underline-worthy," if you will. Additionally, I realized that I love the annotating technique because large texts could look so overwhelming and it's good to find the highlighted focus. Lastly, I appreciated the information given within the text we were underlining, annotating and outlining because it actually gave significant tips for effective e-mails. Class was effective and enjoyable today.

    4. I agree with you. Reading long paragraphs while studying has always been a pain. I'm thankful that we learned how to identify the main points and underline what is noteworthy.

    5. I also agree, these lessons so far have greatly benefited us in terms of our technical writing abilities and identifying the main points of the passages that we have read. I also found the lessons quite enjoyable.

  12. Our discussion about today's lesson was very productive. I would be able to use the techniques that we learned when I write my essays. It was very helpful. It makes it easier for us to write our essays and be able to notify our mistakes. Although some information were a bit confusing, for the most part, I was able to comprehend and learned what I was lacking in the essay that I wrote for our class because of today's topics.

  13. Today's lesson refreshed my mind about the techniques used to help plan and write an essay. These techniques will also be helpful for studying by breaking down information into key points. I have used these techniques before but today's lesson give me an insightful look on how helpful they truly are and to properly utilize them. These techniques will help me in writing my essays and papers, as well as help me in studying for other classes.

  14. Today's lesson,I learned techniques to find key points when you read. I'm definitely using underlining and annotating when I do research papers in the future. I knew how to outline before, but my mind was refreshed after this lesson.

  15. I really appreciated today's instruction about the different techniques in analyzing an essay. I think it can really help in the future essays that we will encounter. Although I faintly recall being introduced to these techniques in high school, I am glad we are encountering them again in our EN100 class.
I found the technique of underlining to be very useful. It requires that we as readers identify what the main ideas are of the paragraphs. This in-turn will help us as writers, in that we will know how to build our essays on whatever key ideas we want to express.
The technique of outlining is also beneficial to our future writing endeavors. Learning how to find the "skeleton" of the essays we read today can be used inversely when WE will be the ones writing. Creating an outline is similar to a engineer creating a foundation for a house. From our outlines we can 'build' rich and full essays.

    1. I agree with how useful the techniques we learned could really be. We can become better readers and writers by using those techniques. Very creative metaphor about how an outline is like a foundation for a house.

It refreshed my mind on the strategies of underlining, annotating, and outlining. I'm glad that we went over this lesson because it reminded me how to take better notes. Also, it will be very helpful with writing my essays.
