  1. Today's lesson was useful. Writing has always been a part of my life and today's lesson will help me make myself a better writer. While I won't use it all the time, as I have a tendency to write almost all information in fear of missing any information, it's still a good thing to know.

    1. I understand where you are coming from with the fear of missing information. This is where the power of underlining and annotation comes in. Every sentence in a paragraph is created to support the topic sentence, and the main topic; however, most of these sentences play no significant part in getting to the point, in other words, they are sugar coated phrases created to appear beneficial. Through time, you'll be able to see the what's worth the time to understand, underline, and annotate. Good luck~

    2. I had the same fear as you, which is recording everything in fear of forgetting important details. It took me awhile to use annotations and to underline the crucial information from a text. Overtime, I was finally able to effectively use those techniques. When I did that, I realized that I had wasted so much precious time on documenting useless information. My advice to you would be to try to overcome your fear and make use of the things taught in today's lesson. Life would be easier if you do so.

    3. I agree with you on fear of missing information when I write, because sometimes we wouldn't know which information is important and which are not important so we would have the tendency to write almost all of the information making the paper almost a very paragraph that we learned today would be much more easier to read if the paragraph was shorter.

    4. I used to do the same thing you do with writing everything down. However, I realized it was very time consuming and often times it's hard to write down every single thing that the professor is saying before he moves on. After the lesson today, I'm sure it will be a lot easier for us to just summarize and write down the key information we need.

  2. I believe today's lesson was very helpful for me, because I got a chance to really know and understand that reading a essay has a lot to do with techniques. The techniques we went through today was underlining, annotating, outlining, and summarizing.

    1. I agree, as I said in my reaction, I expect this lesson to help me in my further studies [: It's a good learning technique for studying long boring paragraphs.

  3. Today's session was very helpful for first college year students, and it would help us in the next years to come when we are making essays or papers. I think that it was great that we read in class so that we all could learn in the same pace and if someone gets lost, it would be too hard to catch up on the things we would be confused on.

    1. Yes, allowing everyone to participate in reading section by sections gives each student a chance to read and somehow get involve in class participation. Another great way, of course, will be our participation in helping one another. :)

    2. Agreed. I enjoy having to communicate with the teacher and other students. We are all able to be involved and participate, as Maiko has said.

    3. I agree. It is very helpful for first year college students, myself included. I haven't been in school for two years so I feel this lesson definitely allowed me to brush up on all the skills I learned in high school. I also agree that participation from the whole class was helpful. It made it easier to understand the lesson.

  4. Today's lesson was something that I had a basic knowledge of, but practicing it was very useful. Using the tips that I learned today would help me comprehend and remember important information. I think that when I read information, I don't usually retain itd and using these techniques will help as I study. I also learned a lot easier with class exercises. I hope with more of these techniques that I will be a better reader and writer.

    1. I agree, we use these techniques frequently, it's a matter of using them in the right way. Today's lesson was very helpful and I too hope to improve my writing skills.

    2. Practicing the reintroduced strategies was actually very useful, I will admit. I've used annotating and highlighting (instead of underlining) for every subject through middle school and high school and it has definitely helped me retain information. More importantly, annotating and paraphrasing really assists to UNDERSTAND the material. Regardless, these techniques seem very helpful to us as aspiring readers and writers.

    3. This is how I am too. Usually when I read lessons, I forget what I learned the next day. But with the techniques it'll be easier to just remember everything. Using these techniques in studying for tests especially will be a lot easier for us instead of having to cram-study the night before the big test

  6. The lesson that we went over today, are a few of my favorite things to do while reading. Whether it'd be reading a novel, a poem, or an article. Although I've already learned to embed the basic functions and importance of underlining, annotating, outlining, and summarizing, a quick refresher, such as today, helped stimulated my mind into remembering its importance. Furthermore, I have also learned a few tips that I would surely utilize throughout the semester.

    2. I understand where you are coming from. My 11th grade English teacher taught me the importance of underlining, annotating, outlining, and summarizing so today's lesson was a great way to brush up on those skills. It also reminded me of all the times that I annotated and underlined my favorite parts of some of the novels that I read on my iPad. Just like you, I plan to employ what we learned today throughout the semester.

    3. I agree that underlining, annotating, outlining, and summarizing is very helpful not only in English class, but also in other classes like preparing for a test or quiz. When our teachers sometimes gives us a study guide, it's basically like the teacher did the work for us, and today we learned how to study much more effectively by underlining, annotating, outlining, and summarizing the important part of the topic or chapters.

    4. I find myself doing the same thing. Whenever I read a novel whether it be for fun or for a class, many of my books have notations on the boarders. I usually break down what and why the characters are feeling, saying, and doing. I also underline things that stand out to me in the book. Often times I excessively underline things, but I'm sure I can work on that in this class.

  7. In today's lesson, I learned about underlining, annotating, outlining, and summarizing. It was a very basic lesson. I did not have any trouble keeping up with the class. After a section, there would be an exercise which shows if you were paying attention or not. The exercises were pretty easy. Plus, if ever I needed to get information, I would just flip the page. With more practice, I will become better.

    1. I find the exercise helpful as well. It enables us to practice beforehand and see if we have an understanding about what wwe read.

    2. The exercises were really easy for me too. I agree that as long as we practice using these writing skills in and out of class we will become proficient note takes and reach graduation with ease.

But in bigger ways. Students even can help each other to make a perfect literacy from each commits and even use the four base skills that we learn today then make correction to make a perfect story/literacy.

  9. I thought todays lesson was very helpful! It was a refresher of all the things needed to do proper annotations and highlighting as well as outlining. It sets a good foundation for learning more and I liked going over it because I learned some new things that I wasn't aware of. We also learned about summarizing and how to properly summarize which I thought was useful information because it shows you the fine lines between summarizing at plagiarizing another author's work.

    1. I also found what we learned today to be very useful and important. I definitely enjoyed the summarizing part of the class. I learned how crucial it was to properly summarize written work. It was a little confusing at first, but then I think we all started to better understand it later on. Overall, today's lesson was truly helpful and a great way to refresh our understandings of underlining, annotating, outlining, and summarizing.

    2. This is why I find it fun when a teacher says we can write on our worksheet. Every space available could be utilized as a space for knowledge, and most importantly, understanding. Once we begin to annotate, and summarize, we are able to read between the lines. I'm definitely bringing my book next class x)

    3. I also feel that the lesson on annotating, underling and summarizing was very helpful. I appreciate you pointing out the information about the rules of plagiarism on the prompts because I did not notice them. I will check back in the book and refer to them as a future reference for citations. I also enjoyed the helpful information within the context.

  10. I found today's lesson quite simple and straight to the point. It'll be useful for future reading and writing assignments. Although I've learned about these writing techniques in the past, i was unfamiliar with annotating, but with more practice, my writing skills will for sure improve.

    1. I also feel like today's assignment was rather simple. It almost seemed elementary. However, I do feel that the material learned is extremely relevant and rather beneficial. I feel that annotating, underlining and especially summarizing will benefit us in ANY of our classes throughout college, if they haven't already through high school.

    2. I was also unfamiliar with annotating. I probably learned it in the past but never really used it. After the sharing of everyone's work and what they annotated, I have a greater understanding of how to use it. I know will be using the annotation technique in the future.

  11. Who knew that summaries have so much rules! I've always added an idea or opinion as well as writing in first person on them. Now, I realized that they were common mistakes to make. I've already learned majority of the others: underlining and outlining, but I never understood what annotating meant (I couldn't even pronounce 'annotating' right). I'm very glad that I was able to learn it today. Finally.

    1. I felt the same way too. I wasn't so sure about annotating, and what it really meant. I'm hoping that this could really make a big difference in the future as we continue to edit, review, and analyze passages along the semester.

    2. I do the same. The way I write a summary would be written in the way I would present in class, or like telling a friend about the whole synopsis of my favorite movie that she has yet the need to watch. Some of the things we read, like the rules on summarizing were quite new to me, and hopefully, as we continue through this lesson and advance, we'll be able to understand today's lesson furthermore.

    3. I agree what you're saying here, finally learning today how to summarize better and much more effectively and are very important for our future papers or essays.

    1. I agree with you completely. This review did remind us of the importance of underlining, annotating, outlining, and summarizing. I plan to use the information given to us to use it on future reading and writing assignments as well. I know that I will be needing to summarize many writings so now I won't have to stress about how to do it properly. I am glad that we went over all these rules because i know that we will need them later on in life.

  13. I thoroughly enjoyed today's activities. Going over underlining, annotating, outlining, and summarizing was a great way to reestablish what I had previously learned. I find these techniques very useful when trying to understand reading materials. It definitely aids in more effective studying and comprehensive writing. I intend to avidly use these methods throughout my college life in order to better my writing and understanding of content.

    1. I agree that today's activities were helpful and useful. I'm glad that the teacher didn't just read through underlining, annotating, outlining and summarizing, because if she did, I would believe that more than half of our class would not really understand today's discussion.

    2. I agree. it was an interesting refresher class on what we might have forgotten or never learned. It was extremely beneficial to me and I know I will be using these writing skills in other courses as well.

  14. Today's lesson was such a big help. It refreshed my mind and made me look more into what underlining, annotating, outlining, and summarizing really is. These techniques can be really helpful in the long run, when I run into passages that are very complex. I will keep all of these techniques in mind when completing assignments and using it on a daily basis. This is just the foundation, and I'm curious as to what else I could learn, and how much more I could learn and benefit from this class.

  15. Todays lesson seemed very helpful. I am use to underlining sections of writing. Though, I wasn't aware that I was "underlining too much." Outlining is very familiar to me, but I haven't used this technique in awhile, so understanding at using it was a good refresher. I have never used annotations, but I have seen it. I guess that was something new and interesting to learn. Overall the information we read today was very helpful not only for this class, but it can help me in other classes as well. Thankfully & hopefully I will be able to use this knowledge to help me with not taking appropriately.

  16. Sorry! I accidentally posted on section 13 yesterday!
Today's lesson was beneficial, yet traditional. Personally, I have a very short attention span so I've always used the technique for studying and reading literature because it helps me keep my focus and remember the main points. I liked that our class was able to share their answers for the "complete the outline" activity because it's interesting to find the differences of what people think is "underline-worthy," if you will. Additionally, I realized that I love the annotating technique because large texts could look so overwhelming and it's good to find the highlighted focus. Lastly, I appreciated the information given within the text we were underlining, annotating and outlining because it actually gave significant tips for effective e-mails. Class was effective and enjoyable today.

    1. you're right Monica, more often then not I find myself overwhelmed by the large amount of text we must read on a daily basis, but highlighting does help. When studying we don't have to go back and reread everything all over again. It will really make life easier for us, at least academically.

  17. I learned a lot from today's lesson. I had no idea that I was unnecessarily and excessively underlining things when I take notes. I know that I will benefit greatly from the techniques we went over. Now I will be able to take better notes with ease and proficiency. I really liked how we were all able to share our answers and hear each other's opinions.

  18. I really enjoyed the lesson about underlining, annotating, and outlining. Before this class, I'll admit I've never even used the annotating technique. However, now that I'm more familiar with how to use it, I'm sure I'm going to be using that as an easier way to study for future assignments and tests. I think this is also going to be helpful in a fast paced class where the instructor goes over the assignments and lectures really quickly.
