  1. Descriptive Essay is making the reader picture themselves in your description, such as a certain smell, view, feel, and noise. basically using your senses and making it as descriptive as possible so the reader can understand your writing better.

    2. I agree with you on your description of a descriptive essay. The reader really needs to feel, smell, see and hear with the writer!

  2. descriptive essay is an essay that describes something, or defines something. there is a thesis but it isn't necessarily argumentative. The descriptive topic i choose is "why a college education is important" and i chose this because college education is what will effect our future. Today's class activity was very interesting and i learned a lot about free writing. My class free wrote many topics which was very interesting. We also learned how to brainstorm by asking and answering questions.

  4. Learning how to free write was pretty fun and doing the activity on free writing was helpful too. Brainstorming was helpful on conducting a good paper. It explains how you can use the two questions to help you brainstorm your idea for that specific paper. Today my topic was Why is a collage education important. I came up with a lot of ideas and it was fun....

  5. Today's lesson was really good. I got to learn about descriptive essay, free writing, and how to brainstorm and list all the main points of an essay. All of these main factors really help me understand how to conduct a good essay. I really like the free writing part of the activity because it made me realize how much ideas I can get by just writing. I never thought I would get so much ideas just by free writing. Today was really fun and I hope to learn more.

    1. The true meaning of freewriting was a real help. We didn't know how much it'll help us in writing.

    2. I agree. I didn't realize, before today, that free writing can really help us relax our minds and spill out ideas! It is something I will be using in the future, for sure!

    3. agreed, By switching to free writing my writing improved tremendously! Brainstorming also improved my writing and saved me so much time.

    4. I reacted the opposite towards the free writing. I found it difficult to worry less about grammar and organization but I'm hopeful that it will come easily with a little practice.

  6. I think that a descriptive essay is a form of writing that allows the writer to take their readers on a journey into the 'writers minds'. The writer can help the reader really understand how they felt during a certain event, how a food tastes, how a flower smells, etc. For example, I would choose to write about a sad day in my life because I still remember it like it was yesterday, which would be the day we said our goodbyes to my grandma. I could say 'When my grandma passed away, I was hurt', but that wouldn't really bring the reader in and it wouldn't help them feel my pain. If I described it in depth, I could help the reader feel, hear, and smell what I did that day. 'My mom has locked herself in her room, crying and screaming for her mom to come back. My family is surrounding me with pain in their eyes, looking at me, knowing that I am dying inside. I cover my ears, I drown out the sound. I close my eyes, I no longer want to see the sorrow my family feels for me. I leave most of my senses behind. I no longer want to feel, hear, taste or see. Yet, I can still smell the tiny white flowers, 'the flowers of a lost loved one', it brings me to memories of my grandma. The memories of sitting on our brown, flowery couch. The couch that I called my 'Doctors Office'. My grandma is in front of me, she is sick & I give her a pink heart candy to make her feel better. I take away her pain, she acts like everything is okay, she is young again. I open my eyes, I still hear screaming, see pain, feel hurt and most of all I taste my own tears'.

    1. I must say that's really descriptive. I felt like I was a witness to this happening sitting on that couch. I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sure your grandma is looking over you and your family.

    2. Thank you, Fo! It means a lot to hear that!

    3. This really touches my heart. I give condolence to your grandmother.

    4. Thank you for the condolences, Johnny!

    5. I'm really sorry for your loss, and your description is really great. Your writing made me feel as if I were in that room with you.

  7. today, learning the lessons that was covered in class. Its really helpful. Free writing, brain storming, & webbing are what I use when I do my paper. free writing is what I enjoy out of the three because it is what I do the most. Going through the descriptive essay is a way for a reader to organize using either form, sense, etc. to make the reader understand what they are trying to say.

    1. I would choose free writing too if I had to choose between the three.

    2. I agree! I really like the idea of free writing. It helps me get my ideas out!

    3. Free writing is really good to start of with. I really agree because I want my ideas to flow without having to think to hard about it.

    4. Free writing is good! because it shows an idea of what you want to write about and you can fix the little mistakes that is made. The web is also very useful because it can show the topics you have chosen

      Delete
    5. I agree, with free writing you get all these crazy ideas because you just write write write, and later on when you work on your paper it helps tremendously.

      Delete
    6. I enjoy free writing the most too! I don't really feel the pressure when writing, so I just let it keep flowing and once I'm done and I look back on it, that's when I fix the grammatical errors and what not.

  8. Today's lesson was really helpful. It served as a detailed refresher of the material that we discussed. The content in the lesson was familiar to me because I had went over it in high school. However, I had forgotten a thing or two over the summer. I used to brainstorm by listing or clustering/ idea web. But today I actually felt comfortable when we were practicing free writing. I realized that my ideas come at a more constant flow when I free write then when i use the cluster method.

    1. I agree with the free writing part, I noticed that I come up with more ideas by free writing and it gives me a sense of comfort too knowing that I don't have to make any changes or editing until later on when I'm done free writing.

    2. I never cover today's lesson in my high school years. It's a good thing that I learn this now.

    3. I am the same as you, i have forgotten everything i have learned in high school. Going over this again in class really helps refresh my mind.

    4. I agree that this lesson definitely helped me remember what I've learned in high school and also expand my knowledge of brainstorming with the who, what, when, where, why and how method.

    5. These lessons we are learning, brings me back to highschool. Our ideas or the first thing that comes to our mind should help us free write more better. This lesson was a brain refresher for me, and i hope to learn more.

  9. A descriptive essay is an essay that describes an object, person, place, experience, emotion, and situation by using vivid language. The vivid language comes from your senses (sight, smell, hearing, feeling, touching). The reader of the essay must understand the thing that is being described. Also, you have to present an organized and logical description for the reader so he or she can understand what it is you are describing. (Owl Purdue Lab)
The descriptive topic you would select is describing a thing because it is easier for me to be able to describe something I can see.

Today, we learned the writing stage strategies. Also, the big six questions (who, what, where, when, why, and how). Lastly, we discussed brain storming and clustering.I think these strategies would be very helpful to writing a good descriptive essay.

    1. Hey, andrew I also think the big 6 questions will be very helpful in writing a good essay and I hope we all benefit from learning this!

    2. I agree with your definition of a descriptive essay. That class period gave me ideas and inspirations for writing some of my own and the six questions help me figure out my topic.

  10. In my words, a descriptive essay is being specific and detailed to allow the reader to imagine it in their mind more vividly. Todays lesson was pretty fun. Freewriting is a great technique for myself since I get writers block majority of the time. Knowing that I could come up with more ideas by freewriting will definitely benefit me in upcoming essays. I also want to give a shout out to the person who is growing out their hair to donate it to the people who have cancer. That's really amazing of you, you have a huge heart. Sorry, I couldn't remember your name because I'm really bad at memorizing things. I believe your name was John?
    Overall, I enjoyed today.

    1. I have writers block, also. So, I can really relate to what you said. This technique really helped me push the walls down and just write whatever came to mind.

& yes, Drew (I think is his name?!) is awesome for growing out his hair for people fighting cancer!

    2. I get writer's block quite frequently too so the free writing helps.
I also think what John is doing for people fighting cancer is such a great thing!

    3. WRiters block is pretty common against students, so free writing does help, because you can just write whatever comes to your mind, but i would say don't stress when you free write just constantly write whats on your mind!

  11. Today's lesson was a lesson that was never covered in my high school. The three stages of the writing process was a new yet important step for me as a writer to write in a new perspective. We mostly focused on stage one of the writing process. It went on smoothly than I expected.

  13. I’ve learned about the different types of essays during my junior and senior year and our lesson today restored my knowledge of it. The in-class activities really helped me recall all of it. Descriptive essays in my opinion must include a precise choice of words to define what the writer is trying to deliver to the reader. In other words, the writer’s goal is to trigger the reader’s senses while reading or hearing his essay. The lesson today also included audience and how you should base your paper according to who ever is reading it. (i.e. your audience/ reader are elementary students, with that being said you wouldn’t make your sentence structures overly complex or include complicated vocabulary that would scare the student from learning).

    1. I agree! Great lesson! It really helped me gain some ideas on my future essays.

    2. English Composition! It really helped us, didn't it? Yes, don't make such complicated vocabulary. The purpose of the essay is to have the reader imagine in their heads the topic (thing, place, etc.), not scare them from learning.

  14. I believe a descriptive essay gives its audience very specific detail related to the topic and makes the writer go into more depth on what is being said. I would choose the topic food because everyone can relate more easily and its a huge category so there are numerous things I can write about. The last class activity was helpful for me. I find it slightly difficult to stay on topic as well as conjuring up ideas about the topic. So the brainstorming part gave me another way of sorting my ideas through using the who, what, when, where, why and how and then further listing those ideas out. I'll surely be using this method on future essays!

  15. During our last class meeting, we learned about free writing, brain storming, webbing, and descriptive essays. I thought our lesson was really helpful because I have a really bad case of writers block, and the free writing exercise helped me to express my ideas thoroughly on paper, then allowed me to go back and organize them. The webbing also taught me how to organize my thoughts in to categories where I can write about one main idea in each paragraph.

  17. To me, a descriptive essay is an essay that allows the reader to imagine all the things the writer explains. They are always very detailed, hence the word "Descriptive". The reader is able to obtain a better feel in a certain setting, or understand the emotion a character feels in light of a situation. Descriptive Essays also use the literary device: imagery.

  18. Descriptive essays are usually about desrcibing a certain place, event, object, moment, etc. and being very detailed so your readers can comprehend what exactly you are writing/explaining. I think a good example for a descriptive essay would be a "how-to" essay.

  19. The word description says it all. The essay is all about describing a scene, a thing, a personality, events, etc. It is a time for the writer to put their thoughts of these examples of description on paper vividly. It may take time to brainstorm to really describe something but you should write down whatever comes in to mind and then write it down. Be clear and concise with your language and use scenes. And make sure your essay is organized! An organized essay is easy for readers to vividly picture whatever you described in their heads.

  20. Descriptive essay is describing something, whether taste, smell, sounds, feel, scene, or experiences. It describe an emotion or situation the person is feeling. Having understand the structure of descriptive essay, I was able to choose my descriptive essay topic. I decided to choose A Picnic Spot as my topic because it is one of those scene that easy for people to imagine. Not only that, but I'll be able to describe many things from the picnic scene that enable the audience to understand and feel what I'm feeling.
