Visit this URL: http://englishplus.com/grammar/mistcont.htm to review some common mistakes in standard English. Sometimes we misuse words or phrases, but with more review and practice, we can learn to correct this. Did you find this resource to be useful? Why or why not? In addition, discuss your thoughts on today's class activities. (re: definition, essay brain stretcher, etc.)

Yes, this resource was very helpful to me and made me learn from my mistakes from the past. I would say it made me somewhat a better writer. Today's class activity was a small class since it was a moodle day, but it was fun. we learned about writing simple definitions, avoiding commas, etc . Also the picture i got was a rocket and the essay brain stretcher was a good writing exercise that hurt my hand, but exercised my brain:)
ReplyDeletei agree in the past i have done some of the mistakes i wasnt at class today but im sure it would of been a lot of help
DeleteI like the resources. They're very helpful and useful because they focus on the common mistakes in writing.
DeleteI agree that this site will help us to become better writers! I hope this site will be useful to everyone!
DeleteI hope I get better at this because I find it hard to obtain these resources. However, I'll practice my writing like I always have been.
DeleteI agree. This site helped me learn from my past mistakes. I didn't attend class, but it sounds like a good lesson.
DeleteAlthough your picture was a rocket, you partnered up with me and I explained the story of 'twins'. It was a great exercise. I also agree on how the link is an eye opener, showing us our past mistakes.
Deleteit was helpful because ive made some errors like this . It usually lose my point in sentences too so i think practice will help me
ReplyDeleteYes, practice will definitely help. Just keep these resources in mind when writing and you'll get the hang of it.
Deletelike the saying goes "Practice makes perfect."
DeleteIt'll be a mastery once you practice more and more. There's no problem in going back.
DeleteI agree. Practicing the right methods and avoiding errors will definitely make us better writers.
DeleteYes James, practice will help, because practice makes perfect. Haha. But on a serious note, practicing the right methods of writing will help us become better at writing.
DeleteI think this resource was very helpful. It made me realize the possible million errors I have made in writing throughout my whole life. It was a real eye opener. I did not realize how many common errors there were in Standard English. However, what I didn't know before, I know now. It just brings me one step closer to becoming a better writer.
ReplyDeleteI too was taken aback by the mistakes I didn't know I was making. I think English is just a very complicated language because there are so many rules and vocabulary.
Deleteagreed i made the same errors. Things like this make us better Great stuff
DeleteI am relieved to finally know what words I have misused in the past and how to use them correctly. English is quite complicated now that I realized how many mistakes I have done.. I hope to become a better writer!
DeleteThese are great tips for sure. With this, I can practice more on my phrases and sentences.
DeleteThese steps definitely make us better writers, and it is very eye opening to see these common mistakes we make everyday. Good stuff.
DeleteI agree thinking back I probably made errors on every paper I've ever written.
DeleteThat's a great way of seeing things. From reading your reply, it made me realize how many mistakes I've made as well. It really is an eye opener.
DeleteThe misuse of words and phrases is indeed very common and I understand why. One of the reasons being is that those words/phrases are very similar that we forget which one is the correct way of using it. For instance, the words: their, there, and they're. I see many people misusing one word for the other and it's because they all sound the same! Their is used to show possession, there is used to show location, and they're is used as they are. It just takes, like said above, more review and practice and you'll eventually get it. The resource is very helpful because just looking through the list I see some mistakes that I used to make like the phrase "a lot" I use to put the words together like "alot". The resource will help me to remember not to make the same mistakes. I did the moodle and talked about definitions. I did not know synonyms were considered definitions. An example I said was if I were to define mean I would use the phrase "cold as ice".
ReplyDeletei love what your saying is true. i was one of the person, but of course i learned my mistakes from my teachers.
DeleteI agree that we have forgotten the correct way of using our words and phrases. I also see many people struggle with the words there, their and they're. I like your discussion!
DeleteText-ting and instant messaging has made me a novice at these things. It's a slang that got this generation pumping to make a new style of English..
DeleteI agree the similarities in the sounds of the words really do add to the reasons as to why we make these mistakes.
DeleteKind of like how some people would write 'minus well' instead of 'might as well' or use 'their', 'there', and 'they're' in wrong ways.Good point.
DeleteI found this resource extremely helpful because I find myself making these common errors even today. This resource gave me a chance to review things I have already learned and it also gave me a chance to learn brand new things. Although I wasn't in class today, I participated in the Moodle session. We learned about simple and extended definitions, which was really informative. I didn't know definitions could get that into detail!
ReplyDeleteagreed lisa! the easy things in life can help us became a better writer!
DeleteI only attended moodle today as well. I learned about how definitions come in short or long!
Deleteit really is a dependable resource.
DeleteEverybody makes these errors at least once in their life. I make those mistakes too. However, I've learned to overcome them. I've been practicing my writing skills ever since my third year in school. This is a useful tool.
ReplyDeleteThe link above would've been very helpful for me back in highschool when I use to make those types of mistakes. Now, I believe I'm pretty proficient in choosing my vocabulary wisely. Either way, if I end up being confused, I'll refer to this link to assist me in the future. Todays class activity was pretty fun. There were only seven of us in class, so everyone got to share their knowledge during the activities.
ReplyDeleteThis resource is definitely an eye opener. It was helpful to understand what mistakes I have done in the past and shall use this as reference to my future essays. I wouldn't know the difference between certain terms that seem to mean the same. I was surprised that some words showed up on this site. I shall review and practice more!
ReplyDeleteI agree this really was a huge eye opener.
DeleteI was surprised as well. I think if we review and practice more, we will get used to these errors and remember them for future references.
DeleteThe link helped me with grammar since I make so many of these mistakes. I also enjoyed the the activity. The brain stretcher opened my eyes as to how many essays can be written about one topic. The reference and the brain stretcher are two simple ways that would increase my writing by a significant amount and if it wasn't for this class I never would've thought to look for them.
